Riverside is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Trumbull County. The population was 51,859 at the 2010 census. It covers an area of 33 square miles (89 km2). Riverside is located on the southern bank of the Great Miami River, just east of Dayton and west of Cincinnati. The first permanent settler in what would become Riverside was George Rogers Clark, who crossed over into what is now Trumbull County in 1796. The town site was chosen by General Anthony Wayne during his campaign for president in 1800 as part of a strategic location to control river traffic northward from Cincinnati. The village site was surveyed by John Mason Key in 1802 and approved by frontier governor Edward Robinson on March 9, 1803. In 1811, General Andrew Jackson refused to sign a treaty with Tecumseh that would have granted him exclusive rights to trade with Indian nations east of the Mississippi River because he did not think it necessary given his own military successes against Native Americans at Battle Of Horseshoe Bend and Tippecanoe Creek. A group composed mostly of farmers emerged to promote development around what became known as "the Forks" – today's cornerstones of Riverside – including platting out lots on land which had been donated by early settlers or bought from Indians when they were ceded their land back in treaties following the American Revolution. In 1835, local merchant James Gadsden purchased 1,200 acres (500 ha) southeast of downtown Riverside for $4 per acre ($40 million USD today). Gadsden developed this area into one of rural America's largest cotton plantations through slave labor until its closure in 1861; then it became one of America's major industrial cities through heavy manufacturing until suburbanization starting around 1970 led to decline in employment rates across all sectors beginning among those working within city limits at that time), while also developing some significant commercial properties such as The Gadsden Brewery (now Belvedere Place). In 1886 Riverside incorporated as a city with a mayor-council formof government unique among Cleveland suburbs; this allowed it more self-governance while still sharing services with its suburbs under common management/control. Riverside, Ohio is a town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati–Northern Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Riverside were the Pottawatomies, who settled there in 1812. In 1814, General James Wilkinson built a defensive stockade on the south bank of the Scioto River in what is now Riverside. One year later, he and his entire force were captured by General Anthony Wayne while besieging Fort Dearborn on the border of Indiana and Ohio. After being paroled and returned home to Cincinnati, Wilkinson began building a new home for himself and his family at what would become known as "The Park". In 1824, John Fenton purchased land north of where modern-day Riverside sits from Wilkinson for $5 per acre (today's equivalent price would be around $140 per acre). He named it "Fenton's Townsite" after himself and donated it to the Township of Riverside in 1830. Fenton lived there until his death in 1865. In 1836, the Township built its first schoolhouse which still stands today on Elm Street near its original location - just east of Interstate 70! In 1839, John Rolfe moved from Delaware County into Hamilton County to purchase land called "Wrightsville" northeast of downtown Cincinnati along Third Avenue (now Vine Street) - this area became known as Riverside shortly thereafter because so many waves of immigrants had come through that area during that time: Irish Catholics; Germans; Poles; Italians; Greeks etc... Some important landmarks located within this boundary during this time include St. Patrick's Cathedral (built between 1840-1845), Springdale Cemetery (opened in 1850), Businessman's Bank Building (built between 1840-1850), Masonic Lodge No 562 (founded in 1830), First Presbyterian Church #2 (completed between 1840-1845)... Consequently many people here claimed ancestry from all over North America! After becoming one of America's most established communities with its own Post Office – opened on October 12th 1861 – by order of President Abraham Lincoln following Executive Order no 1030 – by 1860 Riverside had also achieved incorporation as a village under state law with 1 millinery shop/dressing room/apothecary business and six lots valued at $4 each assessed against village property... For more than fifty years rural residents could go into town for groceries or services such as plumbing or haircare without ever having to leave their homes again! However starting around 1990 things started going downhill for both businesses & residents alike when criminals began operating outposts throughout town like "The Strip Club" & "The Ghetto", leaving behind crime rates that continue unabated even though police patrols have been increased significantly over recent years... Today there are only two small businesses left open within downtown & scarcely any retail storefronts visible anywhere other than high end boutiques inside city limits!
