The Coast Guard has been in operation in Richmond Heights since 1879. The first Coast Guard station was built on the current site of the Josephine County Courthouse in 1881. In 1902, the Coast Guard acquired a pier and began to use it as a base for patrolling the local waters. In 1916, Richmond Heights became part of the newly created Columbus Township, and then in 1922, it joined the cities of Cleveland and Akron as part of their new Combined Statistical Area. This gave Richmond Heights more power to comparison with its city neighbors and also allowed for more funding for the Coast Guard. In 1979, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which provided $1 billion for both military spending and homeland security projects across all 50 states. This money was used to improve infrastructure such as ports, airports, bridges, Roadsides and other public works throughout America. As part of this money flow, the Coast Guard decided that they needed a new Pier 1 in their district. They selected Richmond Heights because it had an existing port authority which would allow them to build faster than any other municipality within their jurisdiction. The pier was completed in 1980 and has served as a key link between our community and our national shores ever since. Today, we continue to rely on our pier for both commercial fishing operations as well as law enforcement purposes- making it one of our most important assets to protect not only our community but also America’s coasts overall!
