The army gift history in Richmond Heights, Ohio dates back to the early 1800s. One of the earliest known military gifts to the city was a cannon from General George Washington. The artillery piece was donated by Captain John Pemberton and his family after he saw it used in action during the French and Indian War. In 1851, Governor Anthony Wayne presented a rifle to Richmond Heights residents in commemoration of the town's role in national defense during the American Civil War. The rifle would be used by soldiers stationed in and around the city. After the war, many Richmond Heights residents continued to support their local military units through donations and Volunteering. In 1923, Mayor John Fenton dedicated a new armory on Main Street within walking distance of downtown for use by the City services battalion (later renamed as Reserve Battalion) located at 15th & Bellefontaine Streets. This donation marked an important milestone for Richmond Heights as it became home to one of Ohio's first reserve battalions operating outside of Dayton or Columbus. In 1951, another major contribution was made when Colonel Harry Ladd donated two tanks, which would later be put into service with 2nd Battalion (7th Armored Regiment) ofthe Cincinnati Volunteer Army National Guard at Ft Union before being moved to Ft Knox, Kentucky for Operation Black Saturday II during the Korean War. Battalion Headquarters also offered recreational opportunities such as golfing/camping available on-site for members and friends who wished to join them there; this facility continues today as Recreation Center #1! This dedication also led to increased troop enrollment within our reserve battalion; today we have over 100 active duty enlisted members!

In 1865, when Confederate forces sacked Richmond Heights and burned down much of the city center, General Robert E."Monroe" Lee ordered his army to retreat through town to South Mountain instead of attacking onsight as planned. For more than a year following the battle at Appomattox Court House, most of Richmond Heights lay waste as Confederate troops fled southward pursued by Ulysses S." Grant"s redcoats destroyed many buildings and stores before finally withdrawing on April 9th 1865 near what is now Northgate Mall in search of new supplies and reinforcements while also leaving behind an piles of destruction that still remains today
Richmond Heights is a census-designated place in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for Richmond, Virginia. It was laid out in 1876 by John Cook and others as a township in the newly formed Columbiana County. For many years it was a small rural farming community with few buildings other than churches and schools. In 1984, when the westernmost section of Columbiana County merged into Hamilton County, Richmond Heights became one of its original settlements within that county. In recent years there has been significant development taking place in Richmond Heights as an upscale shopping district and bedroom community for Dayton's downtown area (and nearby Springboro). Today's Richmond Heights is located on State Route 6 between I-75 and USRoute 43/SR 528 south of Dayton Airport. The population density is 925 people per square mile (300/km²). There are several high-end stores located within walking distance of each other including Macy's Department Store (the only store open late night), Sears Holdings HomeServices & Hardware, JC Penney, Nordstrom Rack and Kohl's department stores among others. Additionally there are several smaller retailers such as Radio Shack, Lowe's Home Improvement andFifth Third Financial Corporation which situated close to Interstate 75 but without any pedestrian walkability or access to I-75 itself
