Reynoldsburg is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskingum County. Reynoldsburg was founded in 1796 and named for General James Reynolds (1746-1814). Reynoldsburg is located at (41.922211, -81.816694). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which is land and (0.5%) is water. The town of Reynoldsburg was founded on December 1, 1796 by General James Reynolds as part of the Northwest Territory boundary adjustment process established by the United States Congress after Great Britain's defeat in the American Revolutionary War. The first settler in what would become Reynoldsburg was John Evans who bought 160 acres (6 hectares) in 1798 from Nicholas Clairmont and moved his family to what would become the town center that same year. In 1802 John Evans sold his land to George Bushnell who renamed it Bushnellsville after himself and his father-in-law Benjamin Rush (1738-1827), one of president Washington's close personal friends and an early advocate for public education through state channels rather than private schools (). In 1819 Ebenezer Hovey became the first white teacher hired by local schoolmaster Isaac Watts when he started teaching in Bushnellsville Schools Corporation; this company existed until 1865 when it merged with local school district #2 to form Muskingum County School District No. 2 (). In 1824–25 Ebenezer Hovey also served as Superintendent of Schools for Muskingum County; he left office on December 31, 1830 due to health problems unrelated to work related to running schools (). In 1839–40 Wm Muhlenberg built a log cabin upstream from present day Reynoldsburg on what would be called Big Rocks Creek () because wagon roads then crossed over Big Rocks Creek near where it now joins streams White Elk Creek (), Armstrong Creek (), Bear Run (), Beaver Run () and Millstream (). He also constructed a millrace across Beaver Run from where today's Beaver Road opens into Millstream Valley Park (). Reynoldsburg is a town in Campbell County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Miamisburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Originally called "Hancock", Reynoldsburg was established in 1792 by Colonel John Reynolds and his wife Betsy. The first settler, James Flournoy, arrived in 1793. The present town site was laid out in 1802 by commissioners Fayette and Clark from territory east of Dayton. In 1819, it became the seat of Campbell County when all of that county was created from parts of Greene and Warren counties. In 1821, a public school system was organized and named for General William Halleck (1763-1846), an American Revolutionary War hero who had served as an officer under Clinton and Wayne during the war. At that time, only white children were educated in Ohio; black children were sent to closed schools located elsewhere in the state or to private academies until Reconstruction times when they received education through public institutions. In 1865-1866 local gold miners found substantial veins of gold near what is now Reynoldsburg; this led to increased settlement and development there over time. Significant mills built here during this time include Reynolds & Gibbs Paper Company (now Clarkson Paper Co.), Wm Drysdale Meatpacker Warehouse #2 (now defunct), Pappas Brothers Coalyard #1 (now known as White Sands Mining Company), Brown Bros.' grocery store #3 (now defunct) and First National Bank building #1 (recently converted into a home). During prohibition years many businesses closed their doors because alcohol could not be sold openly without violating law.--The Reynoldstown Post Office opened on November 7th 1919.--The old post office building has been extensively damaged by fire but still stands today as one of Reynoldsburg's most important landmarks.--In 1947 Brownsville Steel Mill ceased operations due to environmental problems which have since been resolved; however steel production continued at various other facilities until about 2001 when allsteel close down.--The current town hall/ courthouse building was erected in 1907 on land donated by Judge Jeptha Mayo--Judge Mayo also founded Mayo Academy which provides educational opportunities for high school students throughout Campbell County.--Alliston Township absorbed Reynoldsburg into its borders around 1900.--Today Reynoldsburg functions primarily as a bedroom community for surrounding communities with some retail stores still open serving residents within those areas only.--A large drive-in movie theater formerly operated on East High Street adjacent to the former township library which remains operational today with multiple screens!--During World War II much military activity took place near what is now Reynoldsburg includingtinsect research at Wright Patterson Air Force Base--It should be noted that while many aspects of our history are documented herein there remain gaps which need to be filled such as additional information about early settlers or events that occurred outside the scope of this paper----Based upon these few considerations we can say with certainty that Reynoldsburg has enjoyed a long and prosperous history culminating with its current form circa 1910
