The city was founded by surveyors named John and Mary Ravenna in 1811 as part of a series of Indian Removal Trail settlements. It became a village in 1834 and became a town in 1859. The name "Ravenna" is derived from the word "rasp," which means to reduce or remove wood or other material from land. The community was originally developed around mills that were operated by early settlers such as John Ralston and his brother Amos Ravenna. By 1860, many farms had been abandoned due to lack of water resources and construction on the newly built Union Pacific Railroad caused more than 1,000 families to move into Ravenna during its initial years. Many of these families worked at local mills and factories until railroads eliminated those industries after World War II. Today, Ravenna has become an extremely diverse town with over 60% residents who are either Italian American or Hispanic American heritage. Ravenna is a city in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. The Ravenna ZIP code is 44373. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Ravenna was Nicholas Snyder in 1814. Snyder had been born in 1799 in Stanislaus County, California and died there on October 25th of that year at the age of 78 years and 10 months. He married Ruth White in 1813 and they moved to Perry Township where he erected a log cabin on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. By 1830, Snyder had three children: Nicholas (1824-1910), Anna (1827-1897), and John (1829-1892). In 1836, Rev. John Ransom built a small frame chapel on land donated by Snyder near what is now downtown Ravenna. This chapel became known as Ransom Chapel and continued to be used for services until 1907 when it was replaced by the present day Presbyterian Church building which stands today on Main Street just east of town limits across from the Ravenna High School campus. In 1865, Andrew Griggs bought all of township from Snyder for $800 with plans to make it into an agricultural community with small mills surrounding a central squarecontaining government buildings including a courthouse/ jail and schoolhouse/smithy shop etc.. However this plan never materialized as Griggs died suddenly only two years later while still working on his dream project! By 1870, most residents of Perry Township were farmers who grew corn, beans, wheat or other goods local merchants produced goods such as saddles, harnesses and wagon wheels made locally using coal mined nearby or brought overland from Coal City or Youngstown via Akron via railroads
