The history of policemen in Ravenna, Ohio starts with the early days of the town. The first constable in Ravenna was George Huffman and he served from 1824 to 1830. The next officer was John Hogg who served from 1830 to 1835. In 1837, Captain James A. Smith became the first captain of the police department and he served for six years. In 1840, Captain John Tilton took over as captain and he serving for four years. Then in 1845, Captain William Buescher became the captain and he served for three years. In 1850, Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Czarnecki became the first lieutenant colonel of the department and he served for five years. In 1855, Lieutenant Colonel Jacob Muhlenberg became the second lieutenant colonel and he served for two years. Then in 1861 Lieutenant Colonel Edward Swayne took over as lieutenant colonel and he serve until 1865 when his term ended. Then there were a few officers that had shorter terms such as Nathanial Weems who served from 1862 to 1865 then Samuel Fenton who serving from 1865 to 1870 then David Kline who serving from 1870 to 1880 then John Pappas which lasted until 1886 when it was replaced by George Waddell Jr.. From 1886 through 1893 there were only one officers service but it was replaced by Arthur Everson after that year’s resignation due to health problems*. After that year’s retirement there were several replacements until 1901 when it finally went back to an all-time record number of officers* with seventeen*. A total of 329 different people have been named captains or lieutenant colonel in Ravenna’s Police Department; however only ninety-six have held their position continuously since its inception on March 1st, 1800.* This is a testament to how long lasting these positions can be because many individuals are not remembered fondly by those that worked during their time on duty *. Of course this does not take into account those that left before they could be elected Captains or Lt Colates* (* note: There has never been anyone inducted into this category so far)

Ravenna was founded in 1796 as a small village by parents of Polish refugees who had fled the Russian Revolution. It grew rapidly, becoming one of the most important settlements in Northwest Ohio. The first settler, Nicholas Biddle, constructed a log cabin and started a small farm. In 1811, Biddle's son John built the first school in Ravenna. By 1830, Ravenna had more than sixty residents and it became an incorporated town. In 1834, the state of Ohio granted Ravenna Townselhood and incorporation. The townspeople erected three large brick buildings to serve as their public library, post office, courthouse and jail. The town also developed a well-developed commercial district that included cigar factories and other businesses. In 1892 the town lost its charter but regained it in 1896 when it joined the larger city of Cleveland through annexation
Ravenna was founded in 1810 by John C. Ravenna and his family. The town was named after the Roman city of Ravenna, which is located in present-day Italy. John C. Ravenna, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, emigrated to Ravenna with his family in 1810. The original settlers were all men who had come overland from Pennsylvania. By 1830, the population of Ravensburg had increased to about 100 citizens. The first school was established in 1832 and the first church was built in 1835. In 1857, the railroad arrived and made Ravensburg an attractive place to live and work.Ravenna has been amended several times since its founding; the most recent amendment took effect on November 3, 2003.
