Ravenna, Ohio is a small town located in Clinton County, Ohio. The population was 984 at the 2010 census. Ravenna is known for its retail businesses and its narrow streets. It is also home to the Ravenna Museum. The first recorded mention of Ravenna was in 1814 when John Sayre, a surveyor working for the state of Ohio, made an observation about the location. He noted that there were "a great many cedar trees" and added that it would make a good place to live if development did not continue on nearby settlements which he believed would be "soon platted out." The name 'Ravenna' was derived from this observation and means either '(place) where rams are reared', or '[a] village situated near a wooded hillock'. In 1828, Jabez Priestley surveyed the area and found that there were several other villages with similar names extending intoClinton County but they were all abandoned because of lack of money or trade opportunities. In 1829, Nicholas Biddle founded the first store in Ravenna and named it Biddle's Store after himself and his brother Noah Biddle who owned another store in Cincinnati. In 1830, Isaac Woodward erected what is now called 'The Old Blacksmith Shop' on South Muskegon Avenue just east of downtown Ravenna. This forge served as one of the earliest examples of mechanized production in America and helped define early industrial production methods such as those used by Ford Motor Company in Dearborn Michigan sixty years later!
