Captain John Powell traveled part way across what is now central Ohio on his ill-fated journey seeking passage on board HMS "Endeavour" but died before reaching his destination. Today's community of about 570 people was founded by Captain John Powell's descendants in 1827 on land that he had purchased from Native American traders for $2 per acre ($40 per year).
