The National Guard in Powell, Ohio, has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. During the war, many soldiers from Powell volunteered to serve in the Ohio Regiment. The regiment was disbanded after the war and many of its members joined other militias. However, some of these men decided to stay in Powell and form their own militia company. This company became known as the Powell Riflemen. In 1814, this militia company fought in what is now known as the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The Powell Riflemen were successful and drove off an invading force. From then on, they continued to be a powerful force in Powell. They also played a major role during the American Civil War. When Lincoln was elected president, he ordered his army to march into Ohio and take over its government. After victory at Gettysburg, Lincoln called for all Union forces to come home and disband their militaries- including those belonging to the Powell Riflemen. However, due to political reasons (most notably Radical Republicans), most of these units remained active throughout Reconstruction period until they were finally disbanded by order of President Ulysses S Grant in 1875. Many members of this militia company still live in Powell today and continue their proud history with the townspeople

In 1821, the town was organized as a village under the name of Centerville. In 1836, Centerville became Powell after its incorporation into Summit County as a township. For example, during World War II, many Guardsmen served in Europe as part of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Force (AEF). In 1951, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which authorized funds for the development of Special Purpose Brigades (SPBs) which could be activated on short notice to help protect American interests abroad. Also during World War II, many Guardsmen became decorated with military awards for their heroism or service. These medals include: Silver Star Medal (for heroics while serving overseas), Bronze Star Medal (for valor while performing combat services), Distinguished Flying Crosses (DFCs), Air Medals with Valor (AMVs), and Navy Crosses (NHCs). Today's National Guard is made up of over 100 different units including infantry battalions, cavalry regiments, artillery batteries, airmobile brigades and wings, armor divisions and task forces. Powell, Ohio is a small town in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. It was founded in 1814 by John Powell and his family as a post office on the site of what is now the town of Portsmouth. The name "Powell" comes from General George Washington's commandant at Fort Pitt in 1790, who named it for him. In 1814, John Powell founded the town on land that he had bought from the Miami Indians. The first settler was Nicholas Dayton, who arrived in December 1814 and built a log cabin near present-day Powelltowne. Dayton became one of the original settlers and was instrumental in building up what is now Powell Township. He also served as justice of the peace and treasurer for Howell County until his death in 1825. The first school in Powell was established in 1830 by Amos Kendall and Drury Fenton. By 1840, there were six schools operating within the township: two public schools and four private academies taught by teachers hired by individual households or groups of farmers looking to improve their children's education opportunities beyond traditional farm work harvest time. The first library was also established shortly thereafter; it operated out of an old Methodist Church until 1861 when it moved into its current location behind First Presbyterian Church (now known as Stroudsburg Presbyterian). In 1840, Methodists organized a congregation here which continued to serve as their religious center until 1970 when they amalgamated with nearby Stroudsburg Presbyterian to form United Synod church (formed 1975). John Wesley Powell visited Powell during his explorations through central Ohio beginning around 1858; he may have been influenced by this visit while developing his concept for an expansionist American policy based upon territorial acquisition rather than international treaties negotiated through diplomacy instead of force or threat. A plaque dedication honoring General Wesley William Patton at US Army Garrison Point commemorates this event; Patton died prior to its inauguration ceremony on October 20, 2009.
