The first permanent settler in Powell was Daniel Boone in 1792. A post office called Powell was established in 1807, and remained in operation until 1907. The town was named after John C. Campbell (1801-1864), a soldier who fought with General Henry Clay during the Mexican War and then served as Secretary of State under President James K. Polk. In 1836, Powell's father built a log cabin on what is now Main Street for his family. The original town meeting house burned down in 1886 but was rebuilt and used as the schoolhouse from 1887 to 1912; it burned again in 1944. Powell has been known for its agricultural production since before Mount Union became an important centre for coal mining in the area during the 19th century. In 1881, George Denny erected a large frame farmhouse on what is now Park Avenue; this structure remains standing today as one of the few remaining examples of early 20th century rural architecture in central Ohio

Powell, Ohio is a small village in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 1,391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ross County metropolitan statistical area and is included in the Toledo–Middletown–Beachwood Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in Powell were French soldiers from Canada who built Fort Duquesne around 1788 and named it for General George Washington's father-in-law, Colonel James Wright (1728-1792), also a Canadian soldier. In 1812, Daniel Boone discovered Powell while exploring the Scioto Valley along with his guides John Fenton and Anthony Wayne. Powell was named after him because he had been its first settler and landowner; he began farming there in 1813 with his brother James Boone Sr.. In 1830, Samuel Tilton laid out a town site on what is now north side of Main Street between High Street and State Route 12W (present day US 36) with lots measuring one acre each fronting onto either side of the road. A store opened there in 1830 by Jno.[note 3] The first school was opened in 1834 by Rev[eorge] Copley (1796-1875). A Methodist Church was organized in 1840 by Phebe [Hancock] Woodbridge (1805-1868). A post office was established at Powell in 1845 by Major John Swayne (1800-1859), successor to Major Wm.[eaton] Eaton who had earlier been appointed as territorial governor of this territory which included much of modern day Ohio including Powell. By 1850, there were 218 residents living at Powell; it increased to 461 when gristmill #3 arrived that year followed soon thereafter by a sawmill #5 which crushed wood for fuel until 1861 when all mills closed due to lack of customers or competition from other mills across town led to their conversion into residences outranking powder mill #1 which continued operations until 1865 when it too closed down due to lack of business opportunity; these conversions are still visible remnants today along south side main street between High St & SR 12W where most homes once stood During Reconstruction era following American Civil War much activity took place near arsenal across Main Street next door but no trace remains today
Powell was founded in 1795 by General George Washington and Colonel James Wilkinson. The town had a population of around 300 people when it was first settled. It grew quickly, and by 1800 it had a population of 2,500 people. In 1814, Powell became the county seat of Hancock County. In 1825, the Ohio state legislature voted to create Stark County out of parts of Hancock and Wayne counties. The new county contained much of what is now Powell Township as well as parts of Holmes and University Counties. In 1837, Stark County was renamed Harrison County after Ulysses S. Grant, then President of the United States.
