Portsmouth, Ohio is a town of less than 10,000 people on the shore of the Great Lakes. The town was founded in 1834 by Captain John S. Griggs and his family as a port for shipping salt water cargoes to the nearby city of Cleveland. The first coffee shop opened in 1851 in downtown Portsmouth. The origins of smallbatch coffee can be traced back to 1853, when Captain George Jeninger and his brother-in-law, Amos Kendall, opened the first modern coffee house in Portsmouth. They named their business after their hometown of Dresden, Germany where they had been born and raised. In 1865, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry visited Portsmouth and suggested that the town build its own trading post to serve as a port for goods coming from the Great Lakes region. This led to the creation of the Portsmouth Trading Post Company which grew into one of America's leading small batch coffee companies. Today, many small batch coffee brands are headquartered in Portsmouth including Peet's Coffee & Tea Company (now part of Starbucks), Four Barrel Coffee Co., Rangeman Coffee Company, and Black & Decker Coffee & Tea Workshops Ltd.

In 1870, construction began on The State Capitol Building which would become one of America's most iconic landmarks. It took until 1908 for completion due to financial difficulties experienced by local builder James Aultcliffe after he lost bids to other cities vying for building contracts The State Capitol Building served as the home of both Ohio's governor and state legislatures until 1925 when they were moved to Frankfort where they remain today During World War II much activity took place at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard including production on submarines known as PT-109 through PT-161 After war hostilities ended in 1945 many naval vessels were sold or scrapped including PT-109 through PT-161 along with over 100 acres (40 hectares) waterfront land which eventually became part of Downtown Portsmouth commercial development area In November 2000 Plymouth Corporation announced plans to construct a $145 million mixed use redevelopment project called Harbor Town which would include 14 million square feet (~700,000 m²) office space along with residential units above ground level The project failed to gain final approval from city officials before being abandoned in 2005 although piers have continued to be built atop former shipyards nearby
