Portsmouth, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, built on the Mahoning River and now part of the Toledo metropolitan area. The population was 10,868 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 as a trading post by General George Washington and his army during their campaign against Native Americans. In 1825, Portsmouth became an incorporated village when it joined the larger Toledo city government. It was named for Portsmouth-on-the-Hudson, New York, which had been destroyed by fire in 1814 and again by a devastating tornado in 1888. Portsmouth's history is intertwined with that of its namesake town in New York City: both were destroyed by fire and tornado respectively. The first fires occurred on July 3rd of 1814 while General Washington was marching his troops through what is now Portsmouth; these also damaged much of downtown Toledo but did not cause any fatalities or extensive damage since mostof the buildings were wooden huts not yet made from brick or stone. The second destructive tornado struck Portsmouth on October 15th 1888; this time much more severely than the first as it touched down near Broadway and Donelson Streets causing widespread destruction including entire blocks of homes, businesses, churches and other public buildings along with significant loss of life (at least 84 people died). This event remains one of America's worst natural disasters ever with property damage totaling $27 million dollars ($ today) making it one of only 2 such catastrophes to result in over $100 million dollar damages! Following these tragedies local residents rallied together to start something called "The Redevelopment Association" which aimed to bring new life to Portsmouth despite its past devastation (among other things wanting to help improve education opportunities for locals as well as create jobs). With support from various religious organizations like First Methodist Church and Episcopal Cathedral they hired architects like Benjamin Latrobe who designed some beautiful examples of modernist architecture that can still be seen throughout downtown today (including Latrobe House which houses the Roosevelt Library). This impetus led to many new businesses being born including several garment factories that turned out some really great clothing lines such as those worn by Marilyn Monroe (!), plus IMAX movies filmed HERE! In 1957 Portsmouth consolidated with neighboring Lucasville into one municipality forming "Portsmouth/Lucasville". In 1996 following changes made within the Ohio state legislature Trenton School District #2 merged into Dover Township so that all students attending Dover Elementary School would have access to same curriculum regardless of school district affiliation - thus ending years OF dual enrollment between Portsmouth Public Schools AND Trenton schools! It wasn't until 2001 when Plymouth Township attempted secession from Portsmouth due to a lack of cooperation between both municipalities - this ultimately failed when vote totals showed almost evenly split votes between PORTSMOUTH & LUCASVILLE!!! So finally we are back where WE belong...Dover Township!!!
Portsmouth, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Portsmouth County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 497, up from 476 at the 2000 census. The Portsmouth area has been inhabited by Native Americans since before European contact. In 1792, during the Northwest Territory period, Portsmouth was chosen as the site for an American military post because it was accessible by water and had a good climate for agriculture. It became a town in 1813 and was named after British Admiral Johnstown, which had been evacuated during the Napoleonic Wars. The first school in Portsmouth was built in 1814. In 1835, Portsmouth became part of the newly created United States state of Ohio and its first mayor was Lucius Cook (1799-1860). The city's growth accelerated during World War II when it became one of fifteen cities served by General Motors Manufacturing Company's Proctor Division plant on Union Avenue in Battle Creek Township. During that time, Portmouche produced more than two-thirds of all GM products exported to Japan and other Asia Pacific countries. After World War II ended, USS Hampton Roads (LHD 9) docked at Pier 11 on Hudson River for repairs here between 1945-46; this made Portsmouth one of only two U.S.-built ships ever to visit Japan without taking into account prewar trade statistics In 1967 Plymouth Corporation purchased most of what is now Downtown Portsmouth from their former landlord Commodore Shipping Co., who had leased land from Commodore Mines Incorporated since 1907; Plymouth District No./Providence Place renamed "Plymouth Square".
