The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was a naval shipyard in Portsmouth, Ohio that operated from 1892 to 1971. Portsmouth, Ohio is a small town in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 5,719 at the 2010 census. Portsmouth is part of the Lima-Canton-Muncie, OH Combined Statistical Area. Portsmouth was founded as a landing on Coshocton Creek by Captain John Smith in 1795 and later became a mill town with an industry based primarily on flour production. In 1836, Portsmouth was renamed for Admiral George Rodney after his victory in the Battle of Trafalgar during the Napoleonic Wars. The city's fortunes declined following World War II but have since recovered thanks to its growing economy and infrastructure development including the installation of a new USDOT headquarters in 2006. Today, Portsmouth is home to many cultural attractions such as its USS Constitution Museum which tells history from America's first nationalheroic ship; its restored Carnegie Library; and its annual Shakespeare Festival which features some of North America's best playwrights performing their work outdoors under bright summer skies at nearby Pickering Park

Portsmouth, Ohio is a small city located in the state of Ohio. The population was 7,987 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Portsmouth became an incorporated town in 1854. The first post office opened in Portsmouth on December 12, 1856. Portsmouth was named after English ship Portsmouth which got lost off the coast of America while on its way to India during the Gold Rush of 1849. The town had a population of only 20 people when it was founded and it grew rapidly due to its strategic location as a seaport and railroad junction. In 1870, Portsmouth joined the larger Dayton area and began rapid growth as an agricultural center with large grain elevators and other heavy industry soon followed. By 1910, however, muchof what made Portsmouth such an attractive place for residents had been replaced by development around Interstate 75 and nearby highways including those that led to Cincinnati and Cleveland. Today there are few if any remnants of early Portsmouth society other than a handful of historic homes scattered throughout downtown
