Portsmouth, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Portsmouth County. The population was 11,775 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus–Middletown, OH–Youngstown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area.[1] The city's rich coffee history can be traced back to 1820 when two Dutchmen named Hendrick and Joris Van Rensselaer started a small coffee plantation in present-day Portsmouth. In 1826, they sold their business to an American named Solomon Trotman and his son Daniel Trotman. Daniel Trotman continued to operate the business until 1892 when it passed into private hands. In 1886, Alfred Pemberton founded a company that would become known as Pemberton & Company which manufactured coffee beans for numerous local institutions such as churches and schools throughout central Ohio (now parts of Kentucky and Indiana).[2] Today, Portsmouth's coffee industry still thrives with several roasters producing high quality beans for both local consumers and export markets around the world. Some of these roasters include: First Colony Coffee,[3] Blue Bottle Coffee,[4][5] Peet's Coffee[6][7], Four Barrel Coffee[8][9][10], Broad Ripple Coffee[11],[12], Congaree Coffee Roasters[13], Shakespeare & Sons Tea Shop[14], Reuben Jacoby Tea Rooms[15],[16],[17],[18] – all located within walking distance of one another in downtown Portsmouth or along Route 524 northeast from town limits on the Scioto River.[19] The early years of Portsmouth's coffee industry were very difficult due to lack of resources and competition from other breweries in central Ohio who were more interested in filling up their cups with beer instead of brewing fresh beans for their customers. However over time this changed as various entrepreneurs began investing money into Hull’s Patent Brewery which became one of America’s leading producers of premium coffees (cups) at this time. Eventually many other companies followed suit including Bickerton Bros., English Brothers Tobacco Co., Mr Fuzzy Wuzzy’s Cafe (later Mrs Fuzzy Wuzzy’s Cafe), Ewing & Sons Brewing Co., Aiken Bootstrap Creamery COFFEE COOPERATIVE ( later National Cooperatives), Brown Horse Brewing Co., Powell Street Café COFFEE COOPERATIVE (later Quality Street Café), World War I veteran Dudley Deming opened Deming Drug Store on State Street near Third Avenue where he served deliciousruggedo sandwiches for lunch until 1975 when he closed down due to health concerns.[20]. These days you can find many similar stories about successful businesses closing down during tough times like this all around central Ohio because there are too few licenses available for new businesses today; Which is unfortunate because our region has so much potential!

Portsmouth continued to be a city until 1959, when it merged with neighboring Chillicothe into one municipality effective January 1, 1960 Portsmouth is located at (41.627485, -83.814449).
