In 1837-38 George Stephenson built a series of tunnels under downtown Portsmouth linking two tributaries of the Monongahela River -the Little Miami River (now known as Kanawha) andthe Scioto River- creating a new transportation artery connecting Cincinnati with Cleveland and points northward on Lake Erie via Pittsburgh; this single project made possible rapid growth throughout southeastern Ohio because trade between these northern cities and southern Indiana remained unlimited during those early days of railroad development."
