By 1830, Portsmouth had become an important shipping center due to its position on the river's edge. In 1868, Commodore John W. Perry led his squadron of ships through the port during the Perry Expedition and helped spur growth in the town. In 1916, Portsmouth became an incorporated city and soon began to develop into a major coffee producing center.Today, Portsmouth's coffee industry remains significant and influential, with many cafes and businesses based in the city.
Portsmouth, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Portsmouth County. The population was 26,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus–Middletown, OH–KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Portsmouth was David Sills in 1795. In 1802, James Winchester purchased land in what is today Portsmouth from David Sills. He named it Winchester City after his father-in-law, General John Winchester (1755-1836). The city's first school was built on present day Third Street in 1803 by Rev. Denton Cloudesley and became known as Cloudesley School District No. 2 before becoming Portsmouth High School when it merged with other high schools in 1959. From 1810 to 1830, Portsmouth had two churches – First Presbyterian and Second Baptist – which served as meeting places for local farmers and traders who gathered around those churches for worship during harvest season or for public meetings about issues such as tariffs or road construction. On November 4, 1800, the people of Portsmouth voted to add their name to the United States Constitution because they wanted an organization that could represent their interests on Capitol Hill at Washington D.C.–the first time any town or village within Ohio had done so since Confederation days! In 1910, damage caused by a severe storm caused $100 worth of damage to local businesses and homes; however no one was injured as a result of the storm because most residents were indoors playing cards or watching television when it hit! After repairs were made to many buildings including those destroyed by the storm and others that were only lightly damaged, business began to improve rapidly with many new residents moving into town due to its convenient location midway between Columbus and Cleveland while also enjoying excellent educational opportunities available here! In 1916 Mayor Jno Coyle proclaimed "Christmas Town" due to its large number of holiday related businesses open throughout December! However after World War I ended hostilities ceased completely between America’s alliesasiaandgermanyandromaniameaning that Christmas wasn't celebrated anywhere outside America until 1927 when Rhode Island legalized retail sales of candy canes which then inspired other states(including Massachusetts)to do likewise! By 1929 all but one business closed except for one department store which continued serving customers through Christmas Eve despite having less inventory than usual because everyone else had closed up shop due To Prohibition!!! In 1935 Governor Bob Taft signed legislation making Portsmouth an incorporated village; this designation removed any prohibition laws from our community thereby restoring much needed economic stability !! In 1941 resident Capt Hugh Boyle enlisted in World War II service earning both military decorations along with distinction himself before being discharged following his discharge date November 14th 1945!!!!! Following World War II USS Constitution (CV-32) conducted repair work on Southampton Pier on May 5th 1948 utilizing rates provided by John Brown & Sons Incorporated!!!! This event helped further revive shipping activity within our community starting right back up again!!! Many members Of The Class Of 1948 Retired Here Including: Mrs Loretta Benzie Judge (Mayor 1978 thru 1984), Mr Joe Vilela Jr., Mrs Teresa Buschini Goodyear (Librarian 1988 thru 1998), Lt Col Jeffery Wiegand USMC (Retired 2003), Sgt Ron Canavan USMC (Retired 2004). Also Retiring soon are: Capt Tom Friel USAF(Retired 2006) & Capt Dave Hickey USMC(Retired 2007). We have fantastic memories Of Our Class From 1946 TO Today!!!

Portsmouth, Ohio is a city in the commonwealth of Ohio and the county seat of Portsmouth County. The population was 11,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus, OH-IL-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Portsmouth was first settled by English colonists in 1714 as an agricultural village on the Muskingum River. In 1804, Portsmouth became a town under state law when it split from Muskingum Township. The town's original courthouse still stands and has been used as a library since 1907. In 1903, Portsmouth experienced its first tornado outbreak; damage occurred to homes and businesses within blocks of the then-new courthouse. In 1941, Portsmouth absorbed neighboring villages of Mount Vernon and Northfield into its municipal government; this merger created one of Ohio's largest cities with a total population over 100,000 people. In 1984, however, Portsmouth reverted to its earlier form as an agricultural village once again with a population under 20 thousand people. In 2000, Dovercourt Corporation merged with Peebles Companies Inc., forming Dovercourt/Peebles plc., which then merged with IJ Brockwell Paper Mills Incorporated in 2002 to form International Paper Mills (IPM). IPM owns or operates more than 350 paper mills across 30 states in North America including two plants in Portsmouth - both located within original borough boundaries - making it one of the world's leading paper companies. IPM also manufactures plastics products including polypropylene film and plasticizers for beverage cans and other food packaging materials during production line operations at two plants outside Cleveland that are among Eastern United States' most advanced polymerization facilities
