The Portsmouth, Ohio Army National Guard is one of the oldest and most decorated military organizations in the United States. The history of the Portsmouth, Ohio Army National Guard began with a small group of American soldiers who fought for their country during World War I. In 1921, the United States Congress passed an act that created the Ohio National Guard as part of a system of national guard units in the US. The unit was first stationed in Youngstown but soon moved to Portsmouth where it has remained ever since. Today, the Portsmouth, Ohio Army National Guard is composed of over 16,000 Soldiers and Civilians from all over the Midwest and Northeast. They are responsible for protecting our communities and critical infrastructure across multiple states. As one of only two ARMY NATIONAL GUARD battalions located outside of California (the other being The Denver Post's), we understand how important it is to support our Troops on deployment – from providing donated items such as mugs and blankets to set up camp for troops on deployment to providing logistical support when they need it most. This year marks 100 years since World War I ended and we’re proud to commemorate this important event by honoring members of our unit with unique gifts. Portsmouth is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area and its economic status has grown significantly since its incorporation as a city in 1907. The economy of Portsmouth is based on manufacturing, education, health care, and retail trade. Portsmouth is home to two Naval Shipyards - Ulysses S. Grant Navy Yard and William Halsey Seaweed Yards - which are responsible for building submarines, ships and other naval vessels; as well as to George Mason University's School of Medicine; FirstEnergy Electric Company's Generating Station #1; Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's Tire Plant #2; Black & Decker Inc.'s Machine Shop #3; Clorox Corporation's bleach plant (#4); Summit Foundry Inc.'s furnace plant (#5); Litton Industries' plastics plant (#6), among many other businesses and organizations. Portsmouth began as an agricultural village on the Scioto River about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of present-day Portsmouth proper on Upper Muskingum Creek. In 1837, when Ohio became a United States territory, General David Dixon decided that what remained of the federal government should be moved from Cincinnati to Toledo so that new territorial governments would be more centralized. He directed his secretary John Cuyahoga to investigate whether there was any suitable site for such a government center within 275 miles (441 km) of Toledo instead of in downtown Cincinnati because "Cincinnati knows nothing about our wants." Dixon selected Portsmouth because it had been abandoned by its original settlers after being burned by Native Americans in 1795 and because it had been spared during Indian Wars fought between 1794-1802 east of Cincinnati by General Anthony Wayne rather than near where he lived near Newport with his troops at Fort Washingtonon Monongahela River Valley Campaign Battle Site 4 July 1804 . Commodore Perry’s forces burn this village but not much else comes from it until 1830 when James Fenton opens up Scioto Valley Swamp with his improved land drainage techniques – dredging – making Dover Landing name for him but he never built anything there before he goes backpacking around America doing some Exploring etc., so no one really knows what happened to all those folks living there before 1830 In 1856–57 Drury erected a frame house on North Harbor Street just east of present day Powell Avenue while still working on erecting another house which would become Oneonta A&M Institute later that year On November 1st 1861 Portsmouth residents voted overwhelmingly 3-to-1 to annex into Cleveland due to concerns over social unrest developing elsewhere in the Uniontown–Muskegon Heights Area through lack thereof services available within their own townspeople On January 10th 1863 they annexed into Cleveland again via resolution passed at a meeting called together by Mayor Truxton In 1870 they were annexed into Youngstown due to increasing industrial growth throughout Muskingum County necessitating closer proximity to jobsites
