Piqua, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Summit County. The population was 21,519 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati metropolitan area. The Piqua-Daytona Beach Combined Statistical Area has a population of 50,511 according to the 2016 Census. Piqua was founded by fur traders in 1795 as part of a land grant from King George III to James Wilkinson and his brothers-in-law, David Edwards and Nicholas Flournoy. In 1802, Piqua became part of the Northwest Territory under United States rule following its acquisition by Ohio from Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War. A post office called Piqua was established in 1807, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson invaded what became British America during his campaigns against Native Americans known as The Indian Removal Act (1824). After achieving independence from Great Britain, Ohio became a state on November 8th, 1825; Piqua therefore did not become an incorporated town until December 4th that year when citizens voted to incorporation under Section 10 Of The Revised Statutes Of Ohio (1901). On March 1st 1905 Piqua had a population of 12 residents which increased to 22 on October 25th when they constructed their first water tower which served as their first public building! The City Council adopted Resolution No 987 amending Article VII Of The City Charter dated January 15th 1906 setting forth Regulations for election procedures for all members including Vice President Elects who are not registered with this body but serve without pay! This resolution also provided for staggered terms for Mayor/Council members beginning with 3 years term commencing on January 1st 1908 then 2 years incrementally thereafter culminating with 5 years service starting on January 1st 1912! Elections were held May 7th 1909 through November 6th 1910 Results were as follows: Alderman Michael J Walsh (2nd Ward) - 43% John F Murphy (1st Ward) - 47% Alfonse D Ferraro (4th Ward) - 38% Charles R Foley Sr.(3rd Ward) - 34% William W Rice(5th Ward)!
