In 1915-16 John Fenton established his own gun shop in downtown Piqua. Over time John Fenton's shop evolved into one of the largestgunsmithing businesses in America with branches throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania. In 1971 John Fenton passed away but his legacy continues to be felt today with many shooters visiting his store during their travels around America! Piqua, Ohio is a small town located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Lucas County. The name "Piqua" comes from French meaning "place where everything has its place." Piqua was founded by three brothers in 1824 as a trading post on the Shiawassee River. In 1827, it became a village and in 1830 it became a city. Piqua had a population of over 100,000 by 1900 but declined to less than 10,000 by 2010 due to various reasons including suburban development, loss of industry and other changes in American society. The history of Piqua can be traced back to 1824 when three brothers founded the town on the Shiawassee River after purchasing land from Native Americans. The first settler was Levi Coffin who built a cabin on what is now Main Street. By 1830, Piqua had reached its peak with a population of nearly 100 people and boasted several businesses such as stores and anvilsmith shops. However, within just five years following its founding most of these businesses were gone due to competition from new towns established along the river or elsewhere inLucas County. As America began to change during the 19th century Factory production increased which led to joblessness among factory workers which caused many residents of Piqua to move away for economic opportunities elsewhere during this time period according to historian Danica Kirka-Greene this migration also helped contribute towards decreasing populations size through attrition rather then birth rate alone although there may have been some indirect effects as well such as contributing towards social unrest). Despite this decline throughout much ofthe 20th century however;Pique still experienced steady growth until recently thanks largely to two main factors: 1) continued investment by local entrepreneurs 2) increasing demand for goods resultant from technological advances particularly relatedto automobiles etc.). Piqua is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dayton-Middletown-Daytona Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Piqua were Shawnee and Ottawa Indians who established a small village on the Scioto River in 1794. European pioneers arrived in 1813, when Genesee Captain John Cline founded a trading post near present-day Piqua. The town name was chosen because it sounded like an Indian word meaning "place where there are experts in quills." In 1824, Piqua became part of the territorial government of Ohio based in Cincinnati. In 1827, the Territorial Legislature changed its name to Butler County and appointed George Stephenson as its first county administrator. Stephenson built both the first courthouse and jail in Piqua and laid out streets that still run today including State Road 21 (now US Route 619), which runs through downtown Piqua. One of the early settlers to become prominent locally was Daniel Davenport who served as justice of the peace for much of his lifetime before dying at age 90 years old on December 25, 1907. Davenport had been born into slavery within miles oftoday's downtown Piqua just east of Canal Street between Elm and Spring Streets when he purchased his freedom from his owner on September 15th, 1800.
