It is located on the Maumee River just east of Toledo, within the Toledo metropolitan area. Piqua is part of the Toledo–Middletown–Hudson Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city began as a small village named Grosse Pointe in 1814 and was incorporated as a town in 1837. Grosse Pointe was renamed Piqua in 1881 for General James A. Piqua, an American general during World War I who served with distinction in France and Belgium. In 1951, Piqua became one of the first cities to join Paducah Municipal Airport District No. 1 when it opened east of downtown on Airport Boulevard adjacent to United Airlines Terminal 3B at its current site on Rickenbacker Parkway near Interstate 71/Highway 27 south of downtown.[1] Piqua's rich history can be traced back to European settlement beginning with French traders in 1669 who established fur trading posts along both sides of the Maumee River[2]. The region around present-day Piqua was known as "the Great Lakes Country" because they contained more than 50% of all world trade conducted through those waters during that time period[3]. America’s first post office was established at Grosse Pointe by George Washington Carver in 1836[4]; however, it did not become operational until July 3, 1840 when mail arriving from Canada reached Steubenville.[5] In 1850, land purchases by Nathan McMillan led to what is now called McMillan Park which included much of what is now Wexford Township north side and parts ofnow Dyer Township south side today’s Dayton Hillswest Side today’s Harrison Township east side today’s New Athens neighborhood today’s Johnstown Borough today’s unified township including this township were made between November 4th 1861 and January 2nd 1865 under order from President Abraham Lincoln following his Emancipation Proclamation[6][7][8][9][10]. On October 12th 1865 General James Aptheker visited Grosse Pointe Heights where he ordered local residents to evacuate due to Confederate Siege cannon being brought into town from Hancock County Michigan while he himself remained unharmed[11]; however most residents chose not leave their homes fearing retribution if captured or killed by Union forces should they return home soon afterwards.[12] After nine years without an acting Postmaster,[13]), George Washingtons successor Samuel Tilden appointed Hiram Harriman Postmaster on December 6th 1868 after selecting Jno Crayton Jr., a native son and former attorney living near Cleveland as his choice for Deputy Postmaster; however only operated for six months before having his appointment revoked because he could not meet all qualifications set forth by Tilden such as experience with telegraphy or steamboats[14]. Piqua, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located in the Miami-Kentucky-Ohio Valley region. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. Piqua is part of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to settle in what is now Piqua was Nicholas French in 1795. He purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land from the Delaware and Monongahela Canal Company, which included present day Piqua and parts of German Township and New Lebanon township. French built a log cabin on his land and named it French's Ferry after himself and his brother-in-law Pierre Lafitte, who had founded Baton Rouge, Louisiana some years earlier than he did Piqueau Creek. In 1816 France sold his interest in Frenchman's Ferry to James Wilkinson for £200 sterling (£ today). Wilkinson built a two story frame house on what is now Main Street that became known as Wilkinson House after him. One story of this early frame house still stands today on Elm Street east of Wickham Road near Parkview Elementary School. In 1824 James Wilkinson married Anna Moore from Putnam Township, which includes present day Uniontown Heights and part of Gahanna Township also in Dayton County. They moved to Piqueau Creek where they raised four children: James A., Anna B., Edwin E., Jr." (the father later changed his name to "Eddie")and Mary J." (the mother later changed her name to "Mary Jane"). When they first moved there their home consisted only of one room with a bed/couch that faced west because Mrs. Wilkinson could not find any furniture that would work eastward out into their property; she eventually found an old dresser with six drawers that worked well enough but she put all her clothes inside it until she could get them moving again so they could start living separately from their parents! The family spent winters at Anna Moore's sister's home northeast of Gahanna while attending school during the summer months back at their farmstead atop Piqueau Creek where they grew crops like corn, peas, beans and wheat under high pressure canalside sunlight supplemented by manure dung pails pulled through deep water channels every morning when it rained outside; onions were grown on top of piles of dried leaves collected during winter rains as thick mats! After James Wilkinson passed away in 1847 Anna McKnight took over management duties for her brother Edwin E.'s farmstead across State Route 224 south from Elizabethtown before selling it in 1951 to Lloyd Witherspoon who operated it until 1974 when he donated it to the Trustees for Preservation & Development which operates it currently as a museum open daily except Thanksgiving Day during which time admission is free! From 1800 through 1850 about sixty families lived or turfed around here including people coming downriver for coal mines such as West Point Coal Mining Company #1 & 2 along Rahway creek side northbound lane just past First Baptist Church then up river about ten miles towards Princeton Mill run by John Gregg & others... folks hereabouts always knew each other pretty good by name so you never had too much trouble finding someone if you wanted something... even if you didn't have anything good to wear or no shoes - everyone got together once or twice a week go hunting or fishing cuz there was plenty enough game around here...I remember my grandda used to tell me about when he went out trapping with some friends down near Third River mouth back when things were more peaceful" (from personal interview with daughter Linda M.) Piqua is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 41,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown–Wilmington, OH-KY, Combined Statistical Area. Piqua was founded in 1810 by Ephraim Wilkinson as a trading post on the Scioto River near what is now downtown Cincinnati. The community grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources, including coal and oil shale deposits in neighboring Ross County. The city's first school was built in 1811. In 1865, Piqua became the capital of Ohio after Cleveland was moved from its original home on the University Side to become an urban area with more services and businesses than residents could support. In 1907, Piqua annexed much of nearby Warren Township so that it would have a larger city center within its borders which it could use for business and cultural events such as auto shows and carnivals; this annexation increased the size of Piqua by 100%. In 1916, new annexations added Moreland Township (to form Ross County), West Union Township (to form Butler County), Hocking Township (to form Perry County), Delaware Township (to form Hamilton County) and Muskingum Township (to form Trumbull County). The economic decline of Cleveland during World War II led to a significant increase in productionvolume at Piqua's steel mills when work shifted from other locations due to shortages abroad; however, these factories closed during peacetime while American industry transitioned into an era dominated by foreignproducts such as Japanese cars and planes. By 1970, most industrial jobs had been replaced by service jobs or knowledge-based positions in technology companies; however, some manufacturing rebounds continued until about 2000 when mass layoffs began again due to changes in global economy brought about by new technologies like 3D printing and digital currency mining exploration permits were issued for land within city limits that had been idle for years since they were developed). Major development projects announced during this time include plans for high-rise housing developments called "The Towers" which would tower over Main Street; redevelopment along Middletown Avenue into an upscale shopping district known as " Midtown";[1]and construction of two large stadiums – one overlooking main street known as "BMO Park",[2]the other located adjacent to a former rail yard known as "Great Lakes Stadium".[3] These projects came together to create what has come to be called "The City".
