Piqua is a town in central Ohio, United States. The population was 41,391 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Ohio and the largest city by metropolitan area in Kent County. Piqua is also a center of education, science, industry and commerce with more than 100 companies headquartered there. The history of Piqua begins with early settlers who arrived in 1810 on land that would later be part of what is now Piqua Township. The first school was built in 1812 on the site of what is now the old Central High School. In 1814, when Piqua became a village, it had just six residents. By 1840, it had grown to 10 buildings and over 200 residents. In 1847, Piqua became an incorporated town under the name of "Pequot". In 1865, when Toledo was consolidated into Ohio as part of the new state government, Piquatown annexed portions of northwest Kent County (now Scioto County). That annexation included much of what is now downtown Toledo and led to the nickname "The City That Got Away." After World War II ended and Cleveland's growth exploded due to suburban development around Greater Cleveland Area airports and other industrial areas within commuting distance from Cleveland proper (and because demand for workers by those industries created jobs throughout most or all parts of Northeast Ohio), developers began purchasing large blocks adjacent to downtown Toledo for redevelopment into high-density housing developments called "the suburbs." The town was founded on a rise along the Scioto River, then one of Great Britain's most important trade routes. In 1881, Piqua became one of twenty-four townships in Trumbull County when it was organized from portions of Athens Township and Union Township.
