The Piqua Volunteer Infantry was organized on November 5, 1861, in the town of Piqua, Ohio. The regiment was known as the "Fighting Ten". The regiment fought in the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. The unit lost over 200 casualties and received two citations for bravery.
Piqua is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,023. The median household income was $50,642 and the per capita income was $27,631. The city is home to Piqua State University, which offers undergraduate degrees in business, engineering, education, law enforcement/safety and health sciences. The name "Piqua" is derived from French for "little river." The first European explorers who came to what is now Ohio were Frenchmen seeking fur trading opportunities on the Great Lakes region. In 1792 they discovered a small body of water near present-day Piqua called Wabash River because it appeared to be little more than a trickle at that time. They named this stream after Jean Francois de la Salle's general officer on his ill-fated expedition against the Shawnee Indians in 1795 known as La Salle's Expedition into Illinois Territory (later Indiana). In 1814 Colonel John McClernand built Fort Dearborn on land he had acquired east of where Piqua stands today as part of his efforts to open up Native American country through purchase and treaty negotiation. When General Harrison moved his army across the river during the American Civil War from West Virginia towards Cincinnati via Pittsburgh he destroyed McClernand's fortifications at Dearborn by flooding its interior with artillery rounds and explosives before withdrawing again two days later without troops or supplies! A plaque marks this event which still hangs above McClernand’s reconstructed remains today in downtown Piqua. During World War II Piqua became an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location between Cleveland and Toledo along Interstate 75W which facilitated easy transportation throughout much of eastern Ohio; however most industries closed down during wartime because of lack of demand or competition from other countries outside America like Germany, Japan and Italy etc.; nevertheless some notable companies that did survive include Eaton Corporation (now Eaton Automobiles), Steel Dynamics Inc., Alco Chemical Company (now Alco Energy) among others. Today many streets and landmarks are still named after these successful businesses such as Erie Street in Cleveland Heights & First Avenue in Toledo; Grosse Pointe Blank Arsenal not too far away also bears this name while nearby Armstrong Rubber Co.(now H&R Block) once employed over 20% of all employees within town limits! After World War II there was significant growth in population but infrastructure remained inadequate until 1970 when construction began on what is now known as Main Street; following years additional development took place around downtown including new housing developments as well as professional offices building such as Willard Bank Tower which overlooks Main Street today; major thoroughfare changes also occurred with I-75W being widened from four lanes to six with expressways running concurrently just south of town limits - making it one continuous commercial corridor gracing both sides OF Main Street! Piqua is a city in and the county seat of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 37,724 at the 2010 census. The name "Piqua" comes from the Potawatomi word "k’i-ka-waht", meaning "peninsula". The first known permanent settler in what is now Piqua was Nicholas Halstead, who arrived in 1795. He named his land Kiskiwinckquaon after his home country of Scotland. Kiskiwinckquaon means "place of many white people." In 1813, John Marshall and James Wilkinson tilled the area around present day Piqua for two years before moving on to found Warrensburg, Illinois. That same year, Piqua became part of Ohio as part of the Organic Act of 1802. In 1825, Simon Warner began trading with Indian tribes near present day Middletown and developed a friendship with Chief Tecumseh which led to Warner's purchase of land east of Middletown from Chief Detroit in 1827. This land became known as the Village Square tract because it was located on what is now Michigan Avenue between State Street and First Street NW. That same year, Piqua had its first public meeting when commissioners were elected to manage village affairs through a board appointed by Mayor James Auldridge. In 1830, Revd John Brown organized local Methodists into an independent church called Zion Methodist Episcopal Church which later merged with Congregationalism to form UnitedMethodistChurchofAmerica (UMCA). In 1840–1841 four men - Elijah Parishil (age 24), Isaac Hull (age 25), Isaac Taylor (age 26) and Job Smith Jr.(age 27) - platted what would become today's downtown core around Market Place intersection including current buildings on both sides of that intersection including City Hall Annex building located next door where Marriot Hotel now stands They also built Canion Road across from present day Washington Park Cemetery which served as their parishyard until burial moved to Evergreen Cemetery in 1907 . On November 15th 1840 three men entered this newly plat ed area - Elijah Parishil ( age 24 ), Isaac Hull( age 25 ), Isaac Taylor( age 26 ) & Job Smith Jr.( age 27 ) -and founded Zion Baptist Church . After worshiping there for about six weeks they left to build a more permanent structure but soon disbanded due to lack of funding . One possible reason why they disbanded may have been because they did not agree with preacher Ebenezer Scroggs' theology which held that baptism should be given only unto infants under twelve months old or adults who could read making membership difficult for those without such qualifications Also during this time period other denominations began arriving in town such as Methodist Episcopalians (founded by Brown), Presbyterians (founded by Revd Alexander Henderson), Baptists (founded by Brown & others) while Methodism remained an independent church within UMCA
