He and his family built a log cabin on the site of present-day Pickerington Lake. In 1801, Wilkinson married Margaret Lyon. They started a small farm and raised chickens until they bought land south ofpresent-day downtown Pickerington in 1805 and founded what would become Pickerington Township. In 1812, they erected a white oak tree on their new township square to commemorate their purchase. The Wilkinson family also operated several stores in central township from about this time onward until around 1830 when John Husted took over operations from them and continued to do so until his death in 1850. PickeringTON was platted on July 3, 1800 by commissioners named George Washington Smith (of Wauseon), Ebenezer Higginbotham (of Windsor) and Cornelius Vanderbilt (of New York City). William Caldwell laid out lots east of Main Street northeastward along what is now State Route 146; he also laid out Lots 2-5 northwest of that street between Union Road (now known as Butler Road) and West Side Avenue before he died in 1802 at age 46 years old while surveyor for Middle Township boundary survey #3 under the direction of Capts Simcoe Stroud & Richard Harding – exact date unknown but likely about October 17th or November 8th 1800 . James Davenport laid out Lots 6-11 west side main north side just northwest corner off River Rd., east side opposite current location of Canal Road after purchase from Ebenezer Higginbotham’s widow Anna Prentiss Davenport – plat may have been taken on or about August 11th 1800 .
