Pickerington is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Stark (DMST) metropolitan statistical area. The area now called Pickerington was first settled by families of English ancestry in 1788. A post office was established there on May 20, 1811, and it grew rapidly as a center for trade with surrounding villages. By 1825, the village had a church and an hotel. In 1829, Pickerington became the county seat of Stark County; it remained so until 1903 when Dayton took over that role. The original town site lay mostly on lower Pickerington Creek next to present-day northbound I-75 and southbound US 40/US 422 east of today's village limits. The creek formed its eastern border from where the modern village stands to just beyond where high ground rises above it to form the western border of what is now North Park Township (now Griggs Township). A new town site was surveyed and laid out near what is today's northeast corner of I-75/US 422/northwest corner of present day North Park Township on November 10, 1830 by George Ladd as part of a plan to create far more urban areas within Stark County during the 1830s as part of efforts to promote growth around Lima City in central Ohio while also promoting development along both sides of Interstate 75 throughout much of Stark County. Pickerington quickly emerged as one of northern Ohio's leading communities due to its growing commercial activity: timber trading posts were established there early on, including one managed by Stephen Decatur Pickering who founded what would become known as 'the First National Bank'. By 1840, several other national banks had joined him including The National Trust Company which remains headquartered in downtown Pickerington today; this institution served as one factor driving up business values in towns like Pickerington well into the 21st century. This prosperity led to increased demand for housing – beginning with modest 1-2 acre lots starting at $100 per lot becoming common starting about 1840 – making available much needed open space for settlement within minutes' walk or bike ride from many businesses and services located throughout central Stark County capital city Dayton proper only taking about 30 minutes via public transportation from downtown Dayton - almost duplicating service offered by streetcars running between downtown Dayton and various neighborhoods northwest thereof! During this time period too other incorporated villages - notably Sandusky - experienced rapid growth but without similar levels or fervor behindbuilt industrial redevelopment resulting in theseVillages having largely failed or been abandoned decades later following initial gains made during earlier periods despite active community support evidenced through numerous associations & organizations operating & controlling those same Village amenities & services ..... such As "Sandusky Historical Society" which has been Museum Building On Main Street In Sandusky Since 1895 ...... hosted Annual Meeting Of The Board Of Directors For That Society Every Year From 1895 thru 1993 .... Pickerington is a small town in northwestern Ohio, United States. It was founded in 1814 by Captain James Pickering and his family. The city of Pickerington was incorporated on July 14, 1868. The population of the City of Pickerington was 9,664 at the 2010 census. The community began as an agricultural village on the west bank of the Scioto River. In 1814, Captain James Pickering and his family settled near what is now downtown Pickerington after land grants were given them by General George Washington. The original home of the Peebles family still stands in downtown Pickerington and is currently used as a museum. Pickerington took its name from Captain James Pickering's birthplace in England, which had been renamed "Pickrington" after him because English settlers there first discovered gas leases in that area in 1795. The city's early years were difficult due to constant warfare between Indians and white settlers dating back to the mid-19th century. However, through hard work and determination, picketerson slowly transitioned from an agricultural village to a thriving metropolis within a few decades. In 1863, when Ohio became a state, Pickerton became one of twelve townships within newly created Sandusky County. After several annexation attempts by other townships within Sandusky County during the late 19th century – all without success – it finally attained municipal status on July 14, 1865 following passage of legislation establishing township formality throughout Ohio pursuant to then-President Abraham Lincoln's behest following the American Civil War (see also: Township System of Ohio). As part of this new formality, Mayor John Denton erected what today is known as Independence Hall for public use during deliberations convened by township officers concerned with local politics and development issues; such meetings continued until 1905 when they were moved upstairs to Building A (now First Federal Savings Bank) due to growing litigation costs associated with increased township membership/activity warrants submitted by developers seeking zoning approvals for new subdivisions or commercial ventures located inside their newfound acres (i.e., "rioting"). From 1865 until 1907 only three mayors served consecutively: Denton (1865-67), Wm Hennepin (1867-71), Andrus Slocum (1871-75).
