Pickerington is a city in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. The population was 43,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hamilton County and home to the University of Findlay. The area that now makes up Pickerington was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1803, it became part of what is now Hamilton County and was named after Colonel George Pickering, a British officer who had fought in the War of 1812. The town's economy was based primarily on agriculture until around 1910 when services began to take off due to railroad development. When those services stopped coming in the early 1920s, Pickerington's economy took a dive and its population peaked at just over 50,000 in 1930. However, it had bounced back by 1940 with growth leading to new housing developments and businesses sprouting up all over town. By 2000, however, things were going downhill again with joblessness becoming an issue once again; picketers would often see long lines outside banks or shopping malls because there wasn't enough work available for them during certain hours! But thankfully things have started to improve recently with some new businesses starting up as well as more jobs being created overall thanks to both government initiatives as well as private investment! The population was 10,220 at the 2010 census.Pickerington is located on the east bank of the Scioto River, about southwest of Cleveland and northwest of Akron. It is bordered to the south by Unigine Lake and to the north by Athens Township. The first permanent settler in Pickerington was John Pickering who arrived in 1797 from England. He built a cabin near present-day downtown Pickerington and began trading with Native Americans. In 1814, he married Eliza Houghtaling and they moved to what is now Athens Township. They had three children: John (1799–1874), Lucy (1801–1872), and Samuel (1805–1873). In 1825, Timothy Chandler purchased land around what is now downtown Pickerington from John Pickering for $1 per acre. He named his new community "Pickerton". In 1830, he sold his holdings to James Prentice who also founded the town of Middleburyville on the same site. Over time, other leaders joined Prentice in developing Pickerton into an important center for cotton farming and commerce. By 1850, it had a population of 575 people; however, it declined during the American Civil War due to operations at Middleburyville which were relocated to Uniontown Heights in Scranton County
