Pickerington is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in Stark County after Cleveland. The first settler in Pickerington was Nicholas Pickering on February 3, 1800. Pickerington had its start as a small village of about fifty people near the present day intersection of High and Delaware Streets. In 1810, the Village of Pickerington merged with the Township of Delaware to form one municipality known as "Pickerington." The first post office was opened in 1814. In 1825, when Ohio became a state, Pickerington became part of Warren County and remained so until 1861 when it became part of Stark County. Pickerington is a town in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 14,659 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Pickerington were French traders and missionaries who explored the area in 1797. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army burned the town for refusing to join his military campaign against Mexico. Pickerington was re-established as a town on January 1, 1836 by Act of Congress under the name of Prospect Heights Township. On November 3, 1846, the Town of Pickerington was renamed Trumbull County when it became one of three counties created by statehood for Ohio. The county seat moved from Prospect Heights to Youngstown in 1907 and then to Akron in 1913. Pickerington has had its own school districts since 1903 when it joined Warren Township's district system. In 1933, Pickerington School District No 2 merged with Warren Township School District No 1 and became Polk County Schools; however, that merger did not take place until 1954 because Polk County had not been established yet as a organized county within Ohio! In 1940s there were plans to build an airport in downtown Pickerington but those plans never came to fruition due to World War II being fought on other fronts.
