In 1870-71, Jens Jensen bought 160 acres (60 ha) around present day Perrysburg for $1 million dollars which he used as his farmstead until 1907 when he sold it to George Crouse who donated it to the city for use as an open space park. In 1897, while still an incorporated village, Perrysburg passed an ordinance naming its main street "John Hogg Boulevard" in honor of its founder and namesake of the town - John Hogg himself! Perrysburg is a town in Scioto County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. General Harrison named the town after him and his family – Harrisonburg (now Hickory Hills). In 1825, Halleck & Company built a mill on the Scioto River near what is now downtown Perrysburg. This mill became one of America's largest manufacturers of flour and other grains until it closed its doors in 1868. The mill building still stands today as part of the city hall complex. At its peak during World War II, Perrysburg had a population of over 20,000 people and was known for its steel production plants located around downtown (now abandoned). These plants produced tanks and artillery pieces for America's war effort. Many residents also worked at these plants throughout World War II including many who died in action or were injured; some even lost their lives while working here. One of the most famous products from these plants was an artillery piece called the M14 that helped win World War II forthe United States
Perrysburg, Ohio was founded on October 15, 1800 by surveyors William Perry and James P. Hennigan. The town was named for the then-new County of Perry in Kentucky. The town's first settler, Major John Gibson, arrived in 1796. At its founding, Perrysburg had a population of only 10 people. The town's first store was built in 1802 and the first school was established in 1810. In 1815, the Erie Canal crossed through the town and made it easier to get goods to market from beyond Pennsylvania; this increased trade and prosperity throughout the community. By 1830, however, there were only a few families living in Perrysburg and most of the businesses had closed down or been taken over by others since its inception as a small rural community. The end of the American Civil War created an economic boom for Perrysburg during Reconstruction period which lasted until 1865 when all Union troops left Ohio except for a garrison at Fort Pitts – now Pittsburgh – which continued operations until February 1st 1870 when it finally surrendered to Confederate forces under General Ulysses S Grant). This period is generally referred to as "the great revival" of Perrysburg because many new businesses opened up during this time including several banks (the last existing bank closed down in 1966), two hotels (the original Hotel Sterling burned down in 1922) and three grain elevators that remain extant today (one still stands abandoned).
