He built a cabin on the edge of what is now the village and named itPataskala after his home state. By 1890, Reverend Ladd had developed a small schoolhouse which served as one room with several benches inside and an open fireplace where students could study while adults sipped coffee or Meta beer outside." In 1896 , Revived Phebe McKnight donated land adjacent to her house on Fourth Street in front of town hall so that local dignitaries might picnic there during their visits to town." McKnight also established "the Ladies Aid Society" (later known as "The Sisterhood"), which provided assistance such as laundry/cleaning services to women living alone or working single mothers; this service continued until 1923 when it was replaced by social security." In 1903 , Mrs.. Nora Crouse donated four acres northwest of town square for use as a public school playground." As part of her donation, Mrs.. Crouse agreed not sell any property within her gift boundaries subsequent to its dedication."" It was founded by Swedish settlers in the mid-19th century as a log church settlement on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. The town grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources, and by 1881 it had 544 residents. By 1925, Pataskala had become an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,019. The town lost its importance after World War II and declined thereafter until it fell out of popularity in the 1980s and 1990s.
