Pataskala is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 595 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Iroquois word pataskala meaning "place of many streams". The Pataskala post office was established in 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1922. It was located on the Scioto River. The first settler to arrive in what is now Pataskala Townshipwas John Haggerty who arrived around 1800. He built a log cabin on the bank of the Scioto River. That same year, James Gourley founded a gristmill on the north side of Pataskala Creek which still stands today. Starting out as just two buildings, Gourley's mill soon became one of the largest flourmills in central Ohio. In 1825, Elijah Norris set up his own tannery near where he now lives and continued to operate it until his death in 1875. In 1845, John Denton bought land east of present-day downtown Pataskala from Samuel Forney for $1 per acre (the equivalent of $40 per square mile at ).
