Kemeny established a plantation near Pataskala and started roasting coffee beans. The first commercial roasters in the area were JM & JH Roasters, which opened its doors in 1923. The origins of espresso can be traced back to 1795 when Angelo Ferrara introduced espressobeans into Italy as a way to improve the quality of his then-current trade mark "Espresso Nero." The community was founded by German colonists in 1810 and named for Matthias Patraske, a member of the local Native American tribe. In 1816, United States Congressman James Kapp recommended that Pataskala be renamed "Pataskala" after General Anthony Wayne's victory over British forces at Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Cleveland. In 1864, when cars were introduced to America, locals began using them to transport goods between nearby villages and towns. By 1870, there were six stores and one bank in town; by 1880, there were eleven businesses and two banks; by 1890, there were twenty-one businesses and four banks. By 1900, manufacturing had become an important factor in town's economy with three brickyards producing bricks for buildings and other products; agriculture also played a role but declined during this time due to technology advancements which made farming more profitable elsewhere. In 1795, Simon Newmark opened his first coffee shop on Market Street in Philadelphia which became one of the earliest commercial establishments using roasted beans from various places around the world including Africa, Europe, Asia Minor (Istanbul), Brazil & India! At this time you could buy whole bean or ground coffees at various stores across America!
