Pataskala is a small town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1824 by refugees from Sandusky, Ohio. The name comes from the Delaware word "pataskal" meaning "a piece of land for grazing." By 1830, most of the original settlers had left for other parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania because of religious differences over slavery and worship at different Indian churches. In 1837, John Pritchard purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) in what is now Pataskala Township from Nicholas Browning and moved his family there. He named his new community after his father-in-law's birthplace in Scotland--Pataskala means "Hugh's Place." After several years of growth, Pritchard decided to sell his land to start a new town; he sold it to Nathan Green on June 4, 1845. Green began construction on the first courthouse and jail in Pataskala on November 3, 1846; it was dedicated on December 12 that year. In 1850–1851 Daniel Webster built a sawmill and grist mill on the west side of High Street near where later Interstate 84 would be constructed. A post office called Pataskala was established in May 1850, but it closed due to lack of customers; its last letter arrived in October 1850. In 1865–1866 Major General Ulysses S. Grant visited Pataskala while leading Union forces against Confederate defenders at Perrysburg; he gave an address before a local crowd urging them to support Union causes during the American Civil War. The town prospered during Reconstruction as shops became available for black residents who were barred from many white businesses until after World War II when anti-lynching laws were passed which led to increased arrests and prosecutions targeting African Americans living inpatial areas such as Pataskala
