Parma, Ohio is a small town in the heart of Cleveland. The population was 3,624 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River and straddles both banks of the river. The first permanent settler in what is now Parma was Nicholas Hennepin in 1814. Nicholas built a cabin on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River and named it Hennepin's Landing after his father-in-law, Nicholas Hennepin Sr., who had moved there from Holland. In 1821, John Webster bought land along the river and founded Webster City to serve as its central business district. He also laid out streets and erected buildings including a courthouse and jail. In 1851, Jno. Swayne purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) east of Parma on which he erected a large frame house called "The White House". The home became known as Swayne's Mansion after him and his wife Esther Newmark acquired it in 1899. In 1906, when Cleveland annexed Parma into Cleveland proper, The White House reverted to its original name: Swayne Manor Hotel & Casino). Swayne died in 1911 and bequeathed his estate to his widow Esther Newmark for use as an educational foundation for girls only; this foundation remains active today as part of Cleveland State University's Women’s Studies Department. Mrs. Newmark also gift funded Parma Community College from 1925 until 1968 when it merged with Case Western Reserve University; however, operations of Parma Community College continued until 2002 under then Board President Ross Perot’s administration when it merged with Lorain County Community College system.) From 1928 until 1952, Mrs.Newmark chaired the school board; she later served as president pro tempore from 1972 until her death in 1999 effective December 1st following which time office was taken over by her son Bruce Newmark who continues to chair that position today pending confirmation by trustees.. In 1969 Esther Newmark donated 5 acres (2 hectares) adjacent to her mother's estate east side of town to become Parkland Memorial Park; this park contains a playground、a swimming pool、an amphitheater\/theatre\/a tennis court\/and a bandstand overlooking Ironton Reservoir.—A plaque dedicated to Mrs.-Newmark reads "Eager moment seized while making final donation at mother's funeral."

The first European to visit Parma was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524, while on his way from Venice to Geauga County, Michigan.
