Parma, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 20,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Summit County and lies on the Parma River, about 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of Cleveland. The first Europeans to visit what is now Parma were French traders in 1701 and 1702. George Rogers Clark's force explored this area in 1799 during his attempt to take control of the Northwest Territory from Great Britain. The French built Fort Dearborn here in 1800 as part of their efforts to control the region. In 1803, James Ketchum built a fur trade post at Parma after discovering an oil well there that had not been discovered before. In 1811, General David Dixon decided to move westward from Cincinnati into what is now Summit County because he believed that this area would provide more opportunities for trade with Native American nations than did areas east of the Allegheny Mountains. He named his new county after one of his generals, Giovanni Andrea Campi d'Aosta (1749-1824), who had led forces against Napoleonic France in Spain's War of Independence during the Peninsular War (1808-09). General John Morgan also helped lead this effort and played a significant role in creating Summit County as it exists today. In 1814, Campi became assistant justice on the Ohio Supreme Court and served until 1840 when he resigned due to illness; he was then elected governor of Illinois for two terms between 1841 and 1850). During Reconstruction Period following America's Civil War (1861- 1865), Parma emerged as a center for black settlement due to its lack of available land elsewhere in Ohio or within Union territory nationally. Black families gradually moved into these neighborhoods beginning around 1870 until all African Americans had been removed by 1915 when white residents returned backpacking into what was once black neighborhoods located eastwards along major highways such as I-71 and US Routes 22nd Street/I-675
