Parma, Ohio is a town in theuy of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,987 at the 2010 census. Parma is located on the southern edge of Cleveland and is bordered by Euclid to the east and west, Strongsville to the north, Fairborn to the south and Lakewood to the southeast. The first permanent European settlement in what would become Parma was founded in 1788 by Major George Washington as part of his survey of western land for the government of North America. Washington's group included Jonas Salk and other scientists who developed vaccines against smallpox. In 1801 Parma became a village when it amalgamated with surrounding villages including Bedford (later Westlake), Defiance ( later Eastlake ), Hubbardston ( later Mentor ), Kitchener ( later amalgamation with Medina ) and Newton Heights (later Nowell ). In 1792 Parma had a population of 350 people; however by 1800 it had grown to 2,500 people because of new construction along Erie Canal which connected Detroit with Cincinnati through Parma. The canal gave rise to new businesses such as ice cream sundae parlors and four-day stays at hotels near its terminus at Portage Road in Richfield Township; these activities led directly to development around downtown where more than 30 buildings were erected between 1802 and 1903 alone. During Prohibition Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board agent Harry Janssen observed that "the sale hereof has not decreased one iota since prohibition began." Janssen discovered that many residents were smuggling liquor into Canada from Mexico so he created an undercover operation known as "The Tomahawk" which netted several thousand dollars worth contraband cigarettes each month before finally being shut down on Thanksgiving Day 1923 after days of surveilling neighbors' homes. 2Jenssen's successors continued this pattern until 1933 when prohibition ended nationally both in Ohio and nationally throughout the United States although some cities continued law enforcement operations until well after repeal. Downtown business owners quickly rebuilt or took advantage of available government resources such as eminent domain which allowed them to purchase or lease property adjoining vacant commercial districts for industrial use(e.g., Alderite Coal mines). These developments are still evident today aroundpronounced "Downtown" area including numerous high-rise apartments built during this time period while much older neighborhoods have been abandoned or redeveloped according to current trends
