Parma Heights is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of central Ohio. The population was 9,254 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Parma Heights" originates from Parma, Italy and refers to a fortified town on the border of two counties, Lorain and Summit. The Italianate-style brick buildings of Parma Heights were built during the 19th century as businesses and residences for wealthy farmers who grew wheat, corn, tobacco and other crops in what is now southern Lorain County. In 1892, Joseph Pulitzer purchased land south of Parma Heights and founded The Pulitzer Company which published newspapers in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. In 1905, he sold his share in The Pulitzer Company to Edwin Haily Jr., who continued to operate it as an independent publishing company until his death in 1966. After Haily's death, the company was acquired by Hearst Corporation which changed its name to Hearst Newspapers in 1979. In 1992, The Hearst Corporation merged with Time Warner Inc., making Hearst one of the largest media companies in America. Today there are several properties within Parma Heights that still feature architecture from the 19th century such as John Epps House (a historic mansion) or Gorman Mansion (built for senator George V.) These older homes are popular tourist destinations because they offer glimpses into life back then when people lived close to nature while also enjoying culture and education available only through mail order or expensive traveling experiences such as those provided by Life magazine founder Henry Luce Sr.. Parma Heights was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Proctor and his family as a village on the Scioto River near what is now Akron. In 1915, Parma Heights became a city when it annexed the neighboring town of Mayfield. The name "Parma" comes from Pietro Paolo Romano's poem "The City of Peace" which was written in 1581 and published in 1582. The original settlement site may have been located near present-day Parma Township or even further upriver at Ligonier Falls on the Scioto River west of where Ironton now stands. Parma Heights has been home to some prominent American families for years including Proctor, Houghton, Clark, Dickinson and others who made their mark on local history and culture. One particularly significant resident during this time period was John Dickson White who served as Mayor of Cleveland from 1903-1907 and later served as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War during Reconstruction in America
