In 1892, the Ohio National Guard was organized as a militia to provide defense against possible Indian attacks. The Guard was renamed the Ohio Volunteer Army in 1912 and again in 1916. The Guard was activated for World War I on April 4, 1917 and served until November 11th of that year. After the war, the Guard's role widened to include peacetime military tasks such as law enforcement and public health services. In 1951, the Guard became an all-volunteer force with a headquarters in Columbus. On December 15th of that year, Ohio Governor John Kasich ordered all state guard units to form into local militias to support civil unrest in the wake of what had been called "The Korean War." This created a new sense of militarism within the Guardsmen and many felt their service was no longer needed. Many members decided to retire or leave for other reasons after this decision. However, over time there have been sporadic calls for reactivation of the Guardsmanunits in both government and private settings. Today, there are over 2600 guardsmen serving out their notices expired or resigned from duty throughout the United States including 875 stationed in Ohio (the largest contingent located outside of New York City).

Parma Heights is a small town in Ohio, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Mahoning Valley region of central Ohio. The first permanent settler in Parma Heights was George Stephenson, who built a cabin on the bank of the Maumee River in 1814. He named his village after Parma, Italy, where he had been born some years earlier. In 1825, Edward King founded an agricultural district around Parma Heights and named it for his birthplace. The community developed rapidly due to its location and natural resources: ample water supplies and rich farmland close by. By 1830, there were more than 200 residents living in Parma Heights. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many citizens of Parma Heights enlisted as soldiers or sailors in various units throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania. Some local businesses also functioned militarily; for example, Parma Heights Provisional Armory was used to store munitions for the war effort from 1861-1865. In 1865, when Ohio became an free state following the end of Reconstruction, most of these military installations were sold or condemned and their assets turned over to the government for use within civilian boundaries; however, Parma Heights continued to serve as an garrison until 1880. In 1870s a number of new homes were built in what is now North Park neighborhood near center city; this area would become known as "the Uptown". During this time period much progress was made within town limits including construction of schools (Parmahomes School District No 1 opened its doors on October 16th 1871), fire station #2 (1872), library (opened February 9th 1875) and post office (#1 Opened January 21st 1881). Also during this time period several churches were built such as First Methodist Episcopal Church which opened on December 22nd 1870 followed by Second Presbyterian Church which did same on October 2nd 1873 then Third Presbyterian Church which opened November 17th 1888 just before prohibition started being enforced across America starting January 15th 1886 This era saw many advancements within industry such as steelmaking becoming popular with production reaching 400 tons/month beginning in 1886 then moving up to 2200tons/month by 1911 concurrent with increased railroad traffic through town making it necessary for larger mills not only inside but also outlying areas In recent decades development has occurred along Middletown Avenue across from intersection with Kelly Road bringing jobsites closer to downtown while residential neighborhoods have emerged along Blue Ridge Boulevard just east of I-71
