It is one of two townships in Athens-Clarke County that are both incorporated municipalities, along with North Canton. As a result, Parma Heights has been known as "The Borough". The town was named after Pietro Parma, an Italian nobleman who moved to America in the early 1800s andowned land near what is now Parma Heights Cemetery and Norwalk Avenue. He donated some land to Athens Township for use as a school district boundary. Parma Heights lies on the east side of Painesville Road between its namesake's donation land on the west side and North Canton Township on the east side; it shares borders with Norwalk Township to its south and west while relying only partially on those boundaries for services such as water supply and police protection. Parma Heights is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Parma Heights was James Dickey who arrived with his family in 1792. Dickey and his wifeMary built a cabin on the east side of village square and raised four children there. They were followed by other settlers including John Bigelow (1794-1868), Daniel Biddle (1796-1878), Lewis Kinnear (1800-1872) and David Brownell (1802-1886). In 1814 James Dickey's sonJames Purdy bought land to the south of the square from General Anthony Wayne for $2 per acre. On this land began what would become one of Dayton's most important commercial streets - East Main Street - named after Purdy's older brother Jonathan Wayne who had also founded that city. Parma Heights continued to grow as a residential community until it became an industrial center during World War II when its citizens engaged in manufacturing such as munitions, aircraft parts and textiles. Many of these businesses closed during the war but some such as Rubber City BBQ continue to operate today. After the war, many residents moved away from Parma Heights into new subdivisions or out of town altogether; however, a few families remain forever associated with this small town economy which has seen steady growth over time despite occasional economic declines.
