The United States Air Force has been gifting gifts to the people of Parma Heights, Ohio since 1947. The present-day air force gift history in this community began with the establishment of the USAF Base at Wright-Patterson AFB in 1948. This base was instrumental in helping to form the nucleus of what is now the USAF. In 2003, when President George W Bush announced his plan for a troop surge in Iraq due to popular demand within America's military communities across the country, Parma Heights became one of over 120 recipient communities nationwide that received hand grenades as a gift from USAF personnel stationed there! These hand grenades were symbolically distributed throughout our community following a post-9/11 review process that took into account community needs related to security threats posed by terrorism (and others). The city proper has a population of 27,646 and is located within Parma Township. Parma Heights began as a small settlement on the banks of the Cuyahoga River in 1814 when James Kapp purchased land from George Mercer. The village became an incorporated town on March 1, 1826 under the name of "Newburgh." Parma Heights, Ohio is a small town located in the state of Ohio. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Parma-Middletown-Logan metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Parma Heights was John Hingle in 1814. The name derives from a place called Parmenio (meaning "upper meadow"), which may be where Hingle first met his wife, Abigail Morse. The original home of the Hingles was on North High Street and it still stands today as a historic landmark. In 1825, General Nathan Bedford Forrest arrived in America and founded Forrest's Station near present day Parma Heights Elementary School. This stop on the Underground Railroad helped many enslaved people escape to freedom. There are several preserved buildings associated with this time including an old freight train depot and air compressor station that are currently used for apartments and retail purposes. In 1871, George Stephenson built the Cleveland & Erie Railway through Parma Heights and nearby Middletown which made it possible for locals to get products to market faster than ever before! Today, you can find some amazing pieces of Cleveland history like this train car that has been Museum-quality restored! The village also experienced a great influx of Italians during World War II due to wartime jobs available hereabouts as plant workers or war production slaves; however, most Italian immigrants left after the war ended without any new families coming to join them! Today there are only about 350 residents living within walking distance of downtown Parma Heights – making it one of those rare cases where inner city growth has outpaced suburban exodus!
