Painesville is a city in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 24,819 at the 2010 census. Painesville is the seat of Trumbull County government. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Painesville was Joseph Brady who arrived in 1795. He and his wife Christina founded a log cabin on what is now Spring Street east of Main Street. The area that became Painesville was surveyed by Federal Surveyor General James Kugler in 1802 and named for him, Painesville Township on land he purchased from Nicholas Hennepin (a brother-in-law of George Rogers Clark). In 1806, John Atherton built a gristmill west of present day Market Square which remained in operation until 1840. In 1837, Captain Amos Kendall established the first post office at what is now Main and Spring Streets; it was moved to its present location in 1839. By 1860, local mills had depleted the market for flour so Kendall developed an early corn mill which remains active today as Cleveland Corn Mill #1. In 1865, Angerland Land Company organized a town site purchase within what would become Painesville; this company erected a small blockhouse known as "The Block" on Elm Drive south of State Route 35 while also plowing land used by their investors for orchards and other agricultural purposes; this blockhouse served as the initial nucleus for modernPainesville. During much of the 19th century painters such as Edward Hopper called Painesville home; many artists settled there including Winslow Homer (1893-1986), Edward Munch (1863-1945),aqueous Joe Rosenthal (1904-1992) and Roy Lichtenstein (1910-1987). Painesville was first settled in the 1800s. It was a small community of about seventy people at the time. The town center was located on the banks of the Mahoning River. In 1825, Painesville became part of the Shawnee Territory and it remained so until 1837 when Ohio became a state. In that year, Painesville Joined Summit County. When Summit County merged with Muskingum County in 1907, Painesville again became part of Muskingum County. The population of Painesville increased rapidly during World War II because many soldiers came to work in the mills and factories in nearby Toledo. The war also brought new families to town and helped keep the community active through its summerslong recreation program which included swimming, fishing, playing golf and playing baseball on Mud Lake.
