As of the 2010 census, Painesville had a population of 39,914 and is the second-largest municipality in Lucas County after Cleveland. The city was founded in 1812 as part of what would become Erie County. Painesville is a small town in the southeast corner of Ohio. It was founded in 1824 by landowner George Washington Tappan, who named it for his birthplace, Painesville, Pennsylvania. The first settlers were farmers and traders who bought and sold goods on the Cuyahoga River. By 1830, painters, architects and other professionals had arrived in Painesville to develop its economy as a manufacturing center. The town's first store was opened in 1834 by Elias Howe. In 1865, the Union Bridge over the Cuyahoga River connected Painesville with Cleveland.
