Since the late 1800s, coffee beans have been traded and bartered between countries in the Southern Hemisphere. Coffee was first produced in Africa, where it was ground into a black liquid form and used as currency. Ideas about how to produce quality coffee started to circulate among coffee farmers in South America during the 16th century. One theory suggests that early European explorers brought plants back with them when they journeyed through South America and Asia. Another theory suggests that Indian traders specifically traveled to Brazil and Argentina in search of new land to exploit for coffee crops. Jesuit missionaries were also instrumental in developing coffee culture in Latin America, which has led to the Brazilian name “Judeu do Brasil” (meaning "christian brother from Brazil.") Coffee first reached Oxford, Ohio, by way of Cincinnati on November 12, 1847. The town's first permanent record of enjoying java can be found on October 17, 1848 when a group of local merchants met at The Old Greek Saloon on High Street to purchase two sacks of ground beans from an Italian gentleman named Angelo Petrini. That same year saw the arrival of Captain John Comstock from Hartford Connecticut with his own private wagonload of fresh bean beans destined for Ohio's newly formed Union army under General William Henry Harrison. It is believed that Captain Comstock may have been responsible for introducing espresso-based drinks such as caféAmericano (now known as regular Joe) to area soldiers stationed at Fort Stroudsburg near Pittsburgh Pennsylvania during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). During Harrison's administration (1850-1853), Coffee became one of many items taxed by the government at a rate higher than other goods like coal or saltwater fish set forth by Secretary OF State James Kapp Pemberton during this time period. This taxation was necessary due to concerns over caffeine addiction among American soldiers stationed overseas; however, because espresso predominated throughout Europe at this time period not surprisingly coffee shops flourished instead! In 1850 Coffee opened its doors for business permanently located on Market Street across from what is now The Olde English Library & Museum complex; it remains one of only a handful remaining businesses left open within spitting distance of downtown Oxford today! In 1857 two German immigrants named Johann Georg Dreyer and Wilhelm Klingel founded Die Kaffeekette Zürich AG – one of the earliest Starbucks franchises – along with their Swiss colleague Franz Schneider am Rhein . Klingel soon moved his headquarters from Zurich Switzerland directly into what is now called Oxford University buildings just off Court Road east side – later becoming known as Berlin Square! Deutsche Grammophon Records began manufacturing records soundtrack discs at their plant adjacent to Oxford University… marking perhaps Germany’s entry into world recorded music history! Dreyer & Klingel partnered with Professor Augustus Graham Macdonald who developed a process for roasting whole bean coffees which he patented on December 3rd 1860 using discarded French press filters still extant inside current day Regency Coffee Company building behind Gresham Campus Center! In 1865 Dreyer & Klingel merged with British firm Atherton Joseph Ltd., becoming Atherton–Klingel Ltd.. The Dutch began trading with Asia from 1602 AD until 1624 AD when they first met Arabs on San Juan Islands in Alaska. Columbus reported his discovery of America to Queen Isabella I of Spain on 1492 AD. After experiencing incredible profits from his trips through Asia, he decided to move westward and explore new lands instead of eastward like many European nobles had done before him- something that didn’t sit well with other European rulers at the time. As demand for caffeine grew throughout Europe during the 18th century, a number of entrepreneurs started small businesses manufacturing their own version or variations of espresso drinks called café del mundo (worldcup) because they believed that nobody could truly enjoy true espresso if they only drank Starbucks brand products exclusively. Eventually different types and brands became so popular among certain sections or social circles within society that entire countries began producing their own versions – making sure every region got its fair share! Coffee continued to gain popularity throughout much of the 19th century due largely to health benefits associated with its stimulant properties such as wakefulness and focus ability; however, it wasn’t until 1862 when Roederer & Freyer introduced Kaffeeklasse (coffee class), an innovative French press brewer which allowed cafes across Europe access to high-quality Arabica beans without having them delivered directly from sources like Peru or Java! In 1886 King George V issued a proclamation requiring all public buildings in England must include at least one cupboard stocked full of various types and grades of Coffee!
