The town's name comes from an ancient English settlement called Oxbridge which was located near what is now downtown Oxford on high ground that overlooked both the Scioto and Great Miami Rivers. The first structure built in Oxford were a couple of log cabins thatched with reeds for shelter from the severe weather conditions at that time. By 1812, townspeople had erected a few frame buildings, including a courthouse and jail, and started to develop their economy by fishing and trading with other towns along the Ohio River system. In 1816, they voted to change their name to Oxford after becoming convinced that it would be more popular among residents than their previous namesakes – Monmouth (now West Chester), Kingston (later Lancaster), Cincinnati (then Xenia), or Dayton (then Defiance). On October 12, 1830, while celebrating his birthday at home, James Wright migrated westward with his family overland from Virginia across Seven Forks Jail Bridge into present-day Ohio Territory via Cumberland Gap into western Greene County where he settled down about two miles east of present-day Mount Vernon village on land donated by Richard Harding Sr., one of several homesteaders who responded to John Crain's offer for 100 acres (40 ha) north of Cincinnati in 1824/25 contingent upon Crain becoming mayor thereof within three years - this land lay within what is now northeast corner of Athens Township limits today! In 1799 Stephen Van Zandt purchased 1 acre (0.40 ha) southeast of present-day Mount Vernon village on lands lying just south of Vineyards Road following his purchase from David Humphreys – these same boundaries subsequently constituted northwest corner then southeast corner today’s township line shares between Van Zandt’s heirs Appraisers Office Building lot & future home property @ 25 Walnut Street NE & house lot @ 350 Vineyards Rd NW today’s location for old post office building just inside 7 Forks Jail bridge EAST OF MOUNT VERNON VILLAGE! Moses Brownlow established himself as an entrepreneur early inOxford's history& developed many successful businesses such as paper mills & zinc smelting operations until his death in 1865 due to typhoid fever contracted while working as foreman at local limestone mine--a disease which quickly spread through much of eastern United States during those days! The first store opened up shop hereabouts back around 1800 when Mr Brownlow leased space from Ebenezer Postmaster General for $2 per month plus postage payable TO POSTMASTER GENERAL! During this time American Colonials were arriving en masse seeking opportunity & new homes--some coming even closer than we have ever seen before! This period saw rapid growth & progressivism throughout our community generally fueled largely by entrepreneurial spirit brought about largely by individuals like Moses Brownlow!--thus making us one very interesting place indeed! By 1850 however African Americans began moving into our region also starting out very slowly but surely gaining some level cf social mobility hereabouts despite occasional setbacks caused primarily by racism& white supremacy still quite alive back then!--thus making things somewhat more complicated but no less fascinating nonetheless!
