Oxford, Ohio is a small town in the north-central part of the state of Ohio. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Springfield area. The town was founded in 1828 by General James Wilkinson and named for his daughter Oxford in honor of her father's home country, England. The first permanent settler in present-day Oxford was John Haggerty, who arrived in 1827 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. A year later, he married Sarah Fenton and started to cultivate land around their cabin. By 1830, Haggerty had purchased 3 acres (1 km2) of land from David Morehead and built a house there on that acreage. He also developed an irrigation system to irrigate his crops. In 1831, Haggerty married Catharine Gibson and moved his family to their new farmstead; it would remain their home until they sold it in 1881 to Amos Witherspoon Jr., who became head farmer there until 1919. In 1836, Anna Williamson bought 2 acres (0.8 km2) of land from John Everett for $10 per acre (). She began to build a log cabin with help from her brother-in-law Jeptha Goodloe () soon after purchase; it was not finished for several years because she died unmarried at age 45 before completion . In 1840, Anna's husband John Williamson added 1/4 mile (0.6 km) eastward along US Highway 25 from where he stood as owner/operator until 1933 when he sold rights back to Anna’s heirs under the Town Name Agreement Act ().
