On July 20, 1800, Oxford became a part of the United States of America. The population of Oxford peaked at over 10,000 in 1920 but has since declined to around 7,500 today. Oxford is known for its rich history and many famous people from its past have contributed to its development including Jesse Owens who attended Yale University and won four gold medals at the Olympics; Ralph Bunche who attended Harvard University and played football for the United States during World War II; and Lewis Capaldi who achieved fame as an opera singer and conductor. Today, Oxford is a thriving community with a variety of businesses and cultural attractions such as Fashion Week,the Oxford Playhouse,the OXFORD Theatre Company,and more. Oxford, Ohio is a small city in the U.S. state of Ohio that was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1788. The city has a population of approximately 30,000 as of 2019. Oxford is the county seat and largest city of Summit County. It is also home to the University of Akron, one of America's largest research universities. The first European settlers in what is now Oxford were Scots-Irish Presbyterians who came from Ulster in Ireland during the 17th century. They began arriving in large numbers beginning in 1639, when there were only 2 or 3 hundred Scots-Irish colonists living in what is now Summit County. By 1700, however, there had grown to over 10,000 people and their descendants still live here today. The early Scots-Irish settlers were farmers who produced corn and other crops on large tracts of land they acquired through purchase or trade with other groups such as the Moravians and Englishmen from England’s North American colonies. In 1810, two Welshmen named John Jones and Thomas Griffiths Came to live near Oxford while working on a new road connecting Ashtabula (now Lake Erie) with Cleveland (then part of Pennsylvania). They built an inn at present day First Street and Park Avenue which became known as the Griffiths House Hotel after them. In 1815, when Ohio became a statehood USA country along with Kentucky it included both Ashtabula Township (now Fairview Heights) east of town along US Route 33northwest of downtownand portions westof town including parts now located withinSummit County From 1824 until 1827 William McKinney was governor while Jackson County was created from parts eastoftown including Fairview Heights In 1830 William McKinney replaced Jackson County’s first governor John Eaton In 1837 mayor James Kapp organized a petition drive for incorporation as a village but failed to receive enough signatures; instead he petitioned for township status which he got On July 1st1840 he formed Oxford Township out 六月一日
Oxford, Ohio was born on December 12, 1811 as a small town in the now-defunct Huron County. It was named after Oxford, England which at the time was a center of learning. The first settlers in what is now Oxford were farmers who came from western Pennsylvania and Delaware. By 1825, there were only five residents living in the town when it was incorporated. The township's first post office opened in 1827. In 1830, the township had a population of just twenty three people and by 1840 it had grown to fifty five people. At that point, the Township Trustees decided to move their offices to downtownOXFORD for efficiency purposes. In 1847, Oxford voters approved an ordinance allowing for irrigation of farmland within the township limits. This helped make possible increased Output from the cotton fields around town and allowed for more businesses to be established including one grocery store and two hotels/motels. In 1865, the Township Trustees voted to annex neighboring townships of Defiance and Perrysburg so that they would have closer proximity to shopping and services while still remaining within their own municipality boundaries
