The United States Army has a long and varied history in Oxford, Ohio. The city of Oxford was chosen as the site of the first American military base in 1812, and the army continued to play an important role in local society until the mid-19th century. In 1815, when General Winfield Scott appointed Colonel James Wilkinson as commander of the garrison at Fort Dearborn, he also ordered Wilkinson to establish a military academy in Oxford. The college was founded on October 1st, 1816 by Col. Wilkinson and two other officers from Fort Dearborn. The first students were enrolled at the academy on November 15th. The academy became operational on December 2nd under the command of Colonel James Wilkinson. After many years of hard work, the college had a three-year existence and graduated its first class of soldiers on July 1st, 1830. It is interesting to note that this early institution – now known as West Point – would serve as an important source for future US commanders during both world wars. Afterwards, relations between America and Great Britain deteriorated severely due to various issues including tariffs and disputes over trade routes alongthe Atlantic ocean. This led to open warfare between America and Great Britain throughout much of 1846-1847; however, American forces ultimately emerged victorious thanks to Commodore John Rodgers’s successful amphibious assault against HMS Nelson off Cape Hatteras Island on April 12th (the Battle of Lake Erie). The victory demonstrated American supremacy over British warships at sea, setting a trend that would continue until World War II

Oxford, Ohio is a small town in the southwestern corner of Ohio, United States. It is the county seat for Athens County and has a population of about 26,000 people as of 2010. The name "Oxford" is derived from the nearby Oxford Hills, which are part of the Appalachian Mountains. The first Europeans to visit Oxford were French traders in 1695. They named it Nouvelle-Orléans after Louis XIV's new French city in France. In 1701, General George Rogers Clark discovered what would become Ohio while exploring the Central American region for British forces during the Northwest Indian Wars. When he was awarded land on the east side of the Great Miami River by President James K. Polk in 1838, he chose to rename Athens County Oxfordshire because it had been his home county since 1701. The town began growing rapidly due to its location close to important transportation links and its proximity to both Cincinnati and Columbus. In 1851, local businessman John Crain donated land at what is now High Street and Market Square for a public square that would be used as an interchange between Cincinnati and Athens Counties. The square quickly became known as "Cincinnati's Center Court." In 1892, Mayor Charles Fenton dedicated High Street between Fifth Avenue and Elmira Road as Main Street which still serves as downtown Oxford today. In 1896, he also funded construction of monumental stone buildings at Broadway/High Street Corner which serve as City Hall (later renamed Statehouse) and Municipal Court Annexe (now called City Hall Annex). Two years later, he donated land along High Street near University Circle for use as parkland which eventually became known as University Park today ().
