The history of the United States Navy begins with Commodore James K. Polk’s filibustering expedition in 1846. The navy was founded on October 14, 1775, when Captain James Cook sailed into British waters and discovered the Northwest coast of America. The first U.S. Naval officer was Commodore John Davenport, who led an expedition to capture Spanish vessels off San Diego in 1821. American sailors had been aiding Spain during the Mexican-American War since1847; when hostilities ended that year, many seamen returned home but some continued to fight for Mexico until it became a republic in 1848. Commodore David Farragut organized a force of over one hundred warships under Admiral Gideon Welles to repel Spanish forces at Veracruz in 1849-50; this victory marked the beginning of American naval hegemony over Cabrera Sound and adjacent seas. The navy also fought against pirates and Seminoles along the Florida Coast during this period; these campaigns resulted in the famous Battle of Tampa Bay (1813). In 1860, Congress passed a resolution recognizing Oregon as a free state; this event is celebrated annually byFlag Day ( November 5th). On July 4th, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell besieged Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor while Union troops were deployed to protect civilians; after two days of fighting, Ewell was forced to surrender without casualties on September 2nd. However Emancipation Proclamation issued May 8th 1863 demonstrated Confederates ability to operate at sea even without support from land forces whenever desired thereby undermining any hope Ulysses S Grant may have had for successful siege warfare against much larger Confederate fortifications at Richmond Virginia In 1865 USS Monitor rammed CSS Alabama towed by HMS Merrimack into Hampton Roads resulting in both ships being sunk together with all hands including Lieutenant Commander Alfred Pyle Due largely to advances in technology during World War II—including aircraft carriers—the navy became increasingly involved in matters ashore as well as offshore deployments around the world including providing air defense for Allied convoys carrying foodstuffs supplies across central Europe and helping liberate countries like Greece and Italy from Italian fascism before moving onto Operation Overlord duringWWII when vast numbers of troops were transported across Normandy France using submarines
