The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Collection at the Oregon Museum of Art (OMA) is one of the most comprehensive collections ofDeployment gifts and artifacts in the United States. The collection began as a small project in 1979, when then- museum director Jane Elledge donated a pair of sandals to the Marines in Okinawa. Over time, donations from other museums, individuals, and businesses have helped contribute to the OMA’s current collection of more than 2,000 items from throughout Marine Corps history. Since 1989, OMAs has been hosting an annual commemoration event for Marines who have served in combat or support roles around the world since World War II. Oregon was one of the United States of America’s most disputed and dramatic regions. This is because it was part of both the Mexican and American revolutions, as well as a time when successive waves of immigrants ( frightened Donationist Mormons in 1847, then actors, entrepreneurs, miners, etc.) made their mark on this nascent republic. Ohio played an important role in these events. It wasn’t until 1792 that Oregon became part of the United States – but Ohio residents were already influential in the region. They ceded land to Washington Territory west of the Great Lakes in order to create what is now Ohio. And they played a significant role in pushing for admission into the Union as a new country. At first, Oregonians didn’t see themselves as much different from their compatriots down south: “We are citizens of all countries; we have nothing to envy or despise among any people on earth; we think our own way and do what we please; and there is no reason why we should not continue so long as our brethren here shall keep within bounds their rights…. We look upon ourselves with indifference towards all others and take pleasure only in acquiring property which will contribute to our happiness” (Fenner). But over time, things started to change. Oregonians came into contact with other cultures more than just Mexicans or Americans: they encountered Native Americans who taught them about fasting and Prayer (Kirkpatrick). They also learned about slavery – something that deeply disturbed many Californios at home- even though slavery had been illegal upstate New York since 1690! The issue arose again during the Mexican Revolution when some Oregonians fought alongside Texan soldiers against Mexico – including some who eventually settled down in Northwest Ohio after California was annexed by Mexico

The name Oregon is derived from Spanish oregano, the native name for the plantago ovata. The land that now makes up Oregon Territory was won by Spain during the Mexican-American War.
