Grant sent troops to help stop a slave revolt in Oregon and they were met with resistance from the local Native Americans who thought they wereinvaders. In 1850, Congress created Cuyahoga County out of part of Lucas County as punishment for polygamy which had been practiced within Ohio since before statehood. The county courthouse was built in 1868 and it has served as the county seat ever since. One such story is that of John Atherton who operated an agricultural colony in what is now Oregon during the mid-19th century. Atherton became known for his experimental farming methods which were later adapted by other farmers throughout Northeast Ohio. Another pioneer to Oregon was James Wickersham who founded a logging camp near modern day Cleveland in 1855 while exploring new lands east of the Mississippi River. Wickersham's settlement survived until 1975 when it burned down due to arson allegations. In 1893, Columbian Exposition took place in Chicago and one of its goals was to promote tourism across America through exhibits and events like this one which featured Oregon as part of its exhibit on "The Pacific Northwest."
