Norwood is a city in theuy of Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The population was 41,671 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. The Norwood/Cleveland Combined Statistical Area has a population of over 5 million people and it is the largest urban agglomeration in Northeast Ohio. In 1861, when Cleveland was founded as a village, its only neighbor was Norwood Township to the east. In 1875, Norwood became an incorporated town after voters approved incorporation by referendum. Norwood, Ohio is a small town located in the northwestern part of the United States. The population was 5,482 at the 2010 census. It is part of Cuyahoga County and is bordered by Akron to the north, Cleveland to the east, and sapphire blue Lake Erie to the south. The first Europeans to visit Norwood were traders from Holland in 1601. They named it New Amsterdam because they thought it resembled that city in Europe. In 1814, General Harrison's army invaded Canada and burned down much of Toronto before reaching Montreal. When he reached Norwood, he ordered his troops to stop at this small village on their march back home. In 1837, Congress passed a law authorizing construction of a canal through central Ohio for irrigation purposes. The local people were so excited about this project that they built a dam and built two locks on the river near present-day Norwood. The canal was completed in 1840 and became known as "The Great Western Canal". Norwood Post Office was established in 1839 (first U.S.) and operated until 1951 when it was merged into Cleveland Post Office. Norwood has had its share of pioneers throughout its history - some who have left their mark on society more than others: George Washington Carver; Cyrus Stiles Dearborn; Edward Everett Hale; Wm Higginson; Jno Matson; Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr.; John F Kennedy; Edwin Ladd; Willis Rooter Sr.; Dave Duffieldsberger; Leroy Saneckiewicz-Kleinmannskiy (1925-2006).
