Norwood is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Norwood was Alexander McGowan, who arrived in 1814. In 1830, John Haines founded the town of Norwood on land he had purchased from the Muskingum Company. The name was changed to Norwood in 1836 when it became a part of Stark County. Norwood became an important transportation and manufacturing center during the 19th century; its mills produced goods such as flour and cotton yarns, shoes, saddles and harnesses, cigars and other tobacco products, printing press ink and paper, bricks and tiles. During World War II much of production took place at Case Paper Co., which made military uniforms for troops across Europe. In 1960-1961 two major floods destroyed most of the community's infrastructure; however many people were able to rebuild quickly using local materials and techniques. By 1968 Norwood had regained most if not all its lost businesses and residents. Norwood is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,773 at the 2010 census. The settlement began as a small cluster of log cabins located near the confluence of the Muskingum and Cuyahoga rivers. Norwood became a town in 1854 when it was granted a post office by the U.S. Department of State. In 1881, it was renamed after Rear Admiral John Norwood (1821-1885), an American naval officer who served during the Indian War and Reconstruction period in the United States Navy. Norwood's history begins with its founding as a log cabin community by adventurous pioneers in 1854. The first settler, George Wagoner, constructed his cabin on what is now Main Street in Norwood Township on May 10th of that year. By 1860, there were six cabins located along what is now North Avenue in present-day Norwood Township; these were added to the village of Norwood through annexation by township on January 15th of that year. The first school opened in 1870 near present day High School Road and Old Orchard Road; this structure served until 1898 when a new schoolhouse was built on Maple Street across frompresent day Middle School Road within sight of current day Wexford Elementary School which sits atop an old quarrysite adjacent to Upper Arlington Cemetery (now part of University Circle). In 1901, one hundred years after founding Norwood, trustees voted to change its name to "Norwest." At this time, most residents lived within 2 miles (3 kilometers) of their homes so there was little need for schools closer to town center or for transportation into town other than walking or horseback riding; however, construction began on a new high school building which would serve Norwood until 1955 when it merged with Columbiana High School south of downtown Columbus to form Ohio State University's Main Campus campus . The growth and development associated with university expansion led to increased demand for housing and businesses throughout town beginning around 1940; accordingly, two larger buildings were constructed on Elm Street between South Park Drive and North Avenue (then known as State street) during this time: First Congregational Church which doubled as both an administrative headquarters for the newly enlarged university services department andNorwest's first grocery store before being destroyed by fire following World War II ; then Second Congregational Church - also later renamed First Presbyterian Church - which functioned as both churches' meeting places before becoming home to Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs from 1951 onward until its demolition in 1997 amid plans for redevelopment including mixed use development .
